Key Words and Phrases:
- "Wa-khfid lahumā janāḥa adh-dhull" – Lower to them the wing of humility; a beautiful metaphor from a bird lowering its wing to shelter and protect its young, symbolizing complete submission, gentleness, and humility.
- "Min ar-rahmah" – Out of mercy and compassion, not out of fear or weakness.
- "Rabbi irḥamhumā" – My Lord, have mercy on them.
- "Kamā rabbayānī ṣaghīrā" – Just as they raised me when I was small.
Tafsir (Explanation):
After Allah commands us to show kindness to parents and forbids even saying "uff" (a word of annoyance) to them, this verse elevates that command to an extraordinary level. Allah instructs the believer to lower the wing of humility before their parents—a profound image of a bird tenderly spreading its wing over its chicks. This means you should treat your parents with complete gentleness, submission, and love, not out of weakness but out of deep mercy and compassion for them.
This humility is not merely outward behavior; it must spring from a heart filled with mercy. When you speak to them, serve them, or even look at them, let your demeanor reflect the softness of a caring parent toward a helpless child—but now in reverse. As they once lowered themselves to raise you, you now lower yourself to honor them.
Then, Allah teaches you a beautiful supplication: "My Lord, have mercy on them as they raised me when I was small." This prayer acknowledges their sacrifices—the sleepless nights, the endless patience, the countless efforts they made when you were weak and dependent. You ask Allah to repay them with His boundless mercy, which far exceeds any kindness you could ever show them. This dua is recommended for them in their lifetime and after their passing, for the righteous believer prays for their parents' well-being and forgiveness.
This verse applies to believing parents. The Quran elsewhere clarifies that one should not seek forgiveness for parents who died upon disbelief, even if they are close relatives. However, kindness and good treatment toward non-Muslim parents in this life remain obligatory, as long as they do not push you to disobey Allah.
A Da'wah Reflection:
Imagine the immense love Allah has placed in parents' hearts—how they endured your crying, cleaned you, fed you, and guided you when you knew nothing. Now, Allah gives you the honor of repaying them through humility and dua. This is not a burden; it is a gift. Every time you lower your voice before them, every time you hold their hand, every time you pray for them, you are planting seeds of mercy that will bloom in your own life. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said that a parent is the middle gate to Paradise—so guard that gate, and you will find eternal success. Let this verse transform your relationship with your parents into a source of spiritual elevation, drawing you closer to Allah and filling your home with barakah (blessings). And when you make this dua, know that Allah, the Most Merciful, never disappoints the one who asks for mercy upon those who showed mercy first.
