📖 English Meaning
And your Lord has decreed that you not worship except Him, and to parents, good treatment. Whether one or both of them reach old age [while] with you, say not to them [so much as], "uff," and do not repel them but speak to them a noble word.

Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Qada (قضى): Commanded, decreed, and made it an obligatory ruling.
  • Ihsan (إحسانًا): Perfect kindness, gentleness, and the highest standard of good treatment.
  • Uff (أف): An expression of annoyance or disgust — the slightest word of displeasure.
  • Tanhar (تنهر): To scold, rebuke, or speak harshly with anger.
  • Qawlan Karima (قولًا كريمًا): Noble, gentle, and respectful speech.

Tafsir (Explanation):

Your Lord — O human being — has issued a decisive, binding command that carries the weight of divine obligation: that you worship none but Him alone, with sincere devotion, and that you direct your worship exclusively to Him. This is the foundation of your very existence. But immediately after this greatest of duties, He connects it to a second, inseparable duty: to treat your parents with the utmost excellence and kindness.

This command is not merely a suggestion or a recommendation — it is a divine decree, firmly established and absolutely required. The mention of parents comes right after the command to worship Allah alone, showing how elevated their status is in Islam. Your worship of Allah is incomplete if you fail in your duty toward those who were the means of your existence in this world.

The verse then highlights the most delicate and challenging situation: when one or both of your parents reach old age and are under your care. This is the time when they may become weak, dependent, and perhaps difficult to deal with. They may repeat themselves, they may need constant attention, they may be forgetful or irritable. This is precisely when your patience is most tested — and most rewarded.

In this situation, Allah commands you: do not even say "uff" to them — the smallest word of complaint or annoyance. If even this slightest expression of displeasure is forbidden, then imagine how much more forbidden are harsh words, shouting, or any form of mistreatment. Do not scold them, do not raise your voice at them, and do not show anger in your tone or your face.

Instead, speak to them with noble, gentle, and respectful words — words that honor them, that make them feel loved and valued, that reflect the deep gratitude you owe them. Remember: they cared for you when you were completely helpless, when you could do nothing for yourself. Now, in their weakness, it is your turn to repay that love with love, that patience with patience, and that sacrifice with sacrifice.

This beautiful command teaches us that true faith is not just about rituals — it is about character, about how we treat those who sacrificed the most for us. When you honor your parents, you are not just fulfilling a duty; you are opening the doors of Allah's mercy and pleasure upon your own life. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said that Paradise lies beneath the feet of mothers, and that pleasing one's parents is among the most beloved deeds to Allah.

So let this verse be a mirror for your heart: if you wish to draw closer to Allah, begin by drawing closer to your parents. If you wish for your worship to be accepted, soften your words to those who raised you. And know that every kind word you speak to them, every moment of patience you show them, is a treasure stored for you with Allah — a treasure that will shine for you in this life and the next.

📜 Verse 21-25 — Al-Isra

Look how We have favored [in provision] some of them over others. But the Hereafter is greater in degrees [of difference] and greater in distinction.
Do not make [as equal] with Allah another deity and [thereby] become censured and forsaken.
And your Lord has decreed that you not worship except Him, and to parents, good treatment. Whether one or both of them reach old age [while] with you, say not to them [so much as], "uff," and do not repel them but speak to them a noble word.
And lower to them the wing of humility out of mercy and say, "My Lord, have mercy upon them as they brought me up [when I was] small."
Your Lord is most knowing of what is within yourselves. If you should be righteous [in intention] - then indeed He is ever, to the often returning [to Him], Forgiving.
