Word Meanings:

(Maghlulah): Chained or tied up, meaning extreme withholding and stinginess.
(Tabsutha kullal-bast): To stretch out the hand completely, meaning extravagant and reckless spending beyond one's means.
(Maluman): Blamed and reproached by others.
(Mahsuran): Exhausted, regretful, and cut off—having nothing left to spend, left in a state of depletion and helplessness.

Tafsir (Explanation):

This noble verse establishes a profound principle of balance in spending, using a vivid and powerful metaphor. Allah (سبحانه وتعالى) commands the believer to avoid two extremes: the first is to keep one's hand chained to the neck—an image of extreme miserliness, where a person withholds charity and kindness even from themselves and their family, closing the door of goodness entirely. The second is to stretch the hand out to its absolute limit—an image of reckless extravagance, where a person spends beyond their capacity, giving away everything until they are left with nothing.

The verse warns that the first path leads to blame and criticism, while the second leads to sitting down "blamed and exhausted"—a state where the person is reproached by people for wasting their wealth, and simultaneously finds themselves cut off, unable to help anyone anymore, filled with regret and sorrow. This is a beautiful call to moderation: the believer is urged to be generous but wise, to give within their means, and to preserve their resources so they can continue to be a source of benefit to others.

This principle was revealed in a context where the Prophet (peace be upon him) gave away his own shirt to a needy person, leaving himself without proper clothing for prayer. The verse gently guided him and the entire Ummah toward the balanced path—neither hoarding nor squandering, but following the middle course which is beloved to Allah.

A Da'wah Reflection:

Islam is truly the religion of balance and beauty. It does not ask you to empty your pockets until you become a burden on others, nor does it allow you to close your hand from the needs of your brothers and sisters. Rather, it teaches you to be a river of goodness that keeps flowing—giving generously, yet sustaining itself so it can continue to give. This verse is an invitation to a life of wisdom, where your wealth becomes a tool for worship and service, not a source of regret or blame. When you spend in the way of Allah with balance, you earn the love of your Lord, the respect of people, and the peace of a heart free from both stinginess and wastefulness. Strive to be among those who give with joy, spend with wisdom, and live with dignity—this is the path of the true believer.

📜 Verse 27-31 — Al-Isra

Indeed, the wasteful are brothers of the devils, and ever has Satan been to his Lord ungrateful.
And if you [must] turn away from the needy awaiting mercy from your Lord which you expect, then speak to them a gentle word.
And do not make your hand [as] chained to your neck or extend it completely and [thereby] become blamed and insolvent.
Indeed, your Lord extends provision for whom He wills and restricts [it]. Indeed He is ever, concerning His servants, Acquainted and Seeing.
And do not kill your children for fear of poverty. We provide for them and for you. Indeed, their killing is ever a great sin.
