Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

If you turn away from them (i.e., refrain from giving them due to lack of means).
Seeking mercy or provision (i.e., waiting for Allah’s bounty).
Which you hope for (i.e., anticipating future sustenance from Allah).
A gentle, easy, and kind word (i.e., a soft and promising reply).

Explanation of the Verse:

This noble verse addresses a situation where a believer may be unable to help those in need—such as relatives, the poor, or the needy—because they currently lack the means to do so. If you find yourself turning away from them, not out of arrogance or neglect, but because you have nothing to give at that moment, and you are waiting for Allah’s provision to arrive, then do not let your turning away be harsh or dismissive. Instead, speak to them with a kind, gentle, and encouraging word.

For example, you can say: *"May Allah provide for us and for you,"* or *"When Allah grants me from His bounty, I will surely give you."* This soft reply preserves their dignity, keeps the bond of love and brotherhood intact, and shows that your heart is with them even when your hands are empty. It is a beautiful Islamic teaching that balances honesty about your situation with compassion and hope in Allah’s mercy.

A Da‘wah Perspective:

This verse is a profound lesson in the beauty of Islamic character. It teaches us that even when we cannot give material help, we can still give emotional and spiritual support through kind words. A gentle promise or a heartfelt prayer can be as comforting as a gift. Islam does not leave a believer without a way to do good—if you cannot give wealth, give a smile, a supplication, or a warm word. This builds a society of empathy, where no one feels rejected or humiliated. Let this verse inspire you to always be soft-hearted and generous in speech, for Allah loves those who are kind, and He will surely reward your good intentions and manners, even if your hands are empty today. Trust in Allah, for He is the Provider, and He will open doors for you to help others in the future.

📜 Verse 26-30 — Al-Isra

And give the relative his right, and [also] the poor and the traveler, and do not spend wastefully.
Indeed, the wasteful are brothers of the devils, and ever has Satan been to his Lord ungrateful.
And if you [must] turn away from the needy awaiting mercy from your Lord which you expect, then speak to them a gentle word.
And do not make your hand [as] chained to your neck or extend it completely and [thereby] become blamed and insolvent.
Indeed, your Lord extends provision for whom He wills and restricts [it]. Indeed He is ever, concerning His servants, Acquainted and Seeing.
