Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- "أَوْ خَلْقًا مِّمَّا يَكْبُرُ فِي صُدُورِكُمْ" – "Or [some] creation that is greater in your breasts" – meaning something even more immense and unimaginable than stones or iron, something that seems utterly impossible to ever receive life again. Some scholars say this refers to death itself, for nothing is greater or more overwhelming in the human heart than death. Others say it refers to the heavens, the earth, and the mountains – the mightiest of creations.
- "فَسَيُنْغِضُونَ" – "They will shake" – meaning they will move their heads in a mocking, derisive manner, expressing disbelief and ridicule.
- "عَسَىٰ" – "Perhaps" – but when this word comes from Allah, it signifies certainty, not mere possibility.
Explanation of the Verse:
Allah, in His infinite mercy and wisdom, continues to address the stubborn deniers of the Resurrection. He tells them: Even if you were to become stones, or iron, or any creation that your minds consider utterly incapable of ever being brought back to life – even if you were to become the very embodiment of death itself, or the colossal heavens and mountains – still, Allah is fully able to restore you to life. Nothing is too great for His power, and no state of existence is beyond His ability to transform and revive.
When the disbelievers hear this overwhelming argument, and all their excuses are shattered, they will not submit. Instead, they will ask in denial and mockery: "Who will bring us back to life after we have died and turned to dust?" The answer comes directly from Allah to His Prophet ﷺ: Say to them, "The One who created you the very first time – when you were nothing, when you did not exist at all – He is the One who will bring you back." The very power that originated your existence from absolute nothingness is the same power that will restore you. For the One who can create from nothing is certainly able to recreate what already existed.
Then, upon hearing this decisive reply, they will shake their heads at you – not in acceptance, but in sarcasm and ridicule – and they will ask: "When will this resurrection happen? When is this promised day?" They ask as if mocking the very idea. Allah instructs His Prophet to answer them: "Perhaps it is near." And indeed, when Allah says "perhaps" regarding a matter, it is a guarantee – for everything that is coming is near, and the Day of Resurrection is closer to every one of us than we can imagine. Every breath we take brings us nearer to that inevitable appointment with our Lord.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
Dear reader, ponder deeply upon this verse. The One who created you from a drop of fluid, who formed you in your mother's womb, who gave you eyes that see, ears that hear, and a heart that beats – is He not able to bring you back after death? Absolutely He is! The resurrection is not a distant fantasy; it is a certain reality that draws closer with every passing moment. Do not be like those who shook their heads in mockery, for their end was regret. Rather, be among those who prepare for that Day with sincere repentance, good deeds, and unwavering faith. The resurrection is near – so what have you prepared for it?
