Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- "Hijarah" (حِجَارَةً): Stones or rocks, known for their extreme hardness and solidity.
- "Hadid" (حَدِيدًا): Iron, which is even harder and stronger than stone.
Tafsir (Explanation):
In this verse, Allah commands His Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) to address the disbelievers who denied the resurrection and the Day of Judgment. They argued: "How can we be brought back to life after we have died and become dust and bones?" So Allah instructs the Prophet to say to them, by way of challenging their stubbornness: "Be you stones or iron!" — meaning, even if you were to become stones in their extreme hardness, or iron in its immense strength and durability, and even if you were far harder and more unyielding than the very earth that will consume your bodies — still, Allah is fully capable of recreating you and bringing you back to life just as He created you the first time. This is not a command of obligation, but rather a rhetorical challenge to demonstrate that nothing on earth or in the heavens can ever escape Allah's power. If even the hardest substances are completely subject to His will, then how could mere human beings — who are far weaker — ever think they can evade His ability to resurrect them?
The verse continues in the following ayah to mention even greater impossibilities — that even if they were to become iron, or mountains, or any creation they deem most formidable, Allah would still resurrect them. This is all to affirm that the resurrection is an absolute certainty, and that no power, no matter how great, can stand in the way of Allah's decree.
A Da'wah Reflection:
This verse carries a profound lesson for every believer. It reminds us that Allah's power knows no limits — He created us from nothing, and He can certainly bring us back after death. So why do we fear anything other than Allah? Why do we hesitate to submit to His commands? If stones and iron — the hardest substances known to humanity — are utterly powerless before Allah, then how can we, weak human beings, ever think we are independent or self-sufficient?
Let this verse strengthen your faith and fill your heart with humility. The same Allah who will resurrect you from dust is the One who hears your prayers, knows your struggles, and sees your every deed. So turn to Him with sincerity, obey His commands, and never despair of His mercy. Indeed, Allah's power is absolute, and His promise of resurrection and recompense is true — so prepare for that Day with righteous deeds, for it is closer than you think.
