Explanation of the Verse:
O Messenger, say to those who associate partners with Allah: "Call upon those beings you claim to be your protectors and deities besides Allah — whether they are idols, angels, prophets, or righteous people — when hardship strikes you. Ask them to remove the harm from you or to change your situation from difficulty to ease."
But the truth is: they possess absolutely no power to do so. They cannot lift the affliction from you, nor can they shift it to someone else, nor can they transform your condition from hardship to prosperity. They are utterly incapable, for they are mere creations — weak and dependent on Allah themselves.
This verse was revealed in a context where the disbelievers of Makkah were struck by a severe drought and famine. They came to the Prophet (peace be upon him) asking him to pray for rain, yet they still clung to their false gods. So Allah made it clear: even the beings they call upon — no matter how revered or exalted they may seem — have no authority over harm or benefit. Only Allah, the Creator and Sustainer of all, holds the power to remove distress and to change circumstances.
And this ruling is universal: whoever is invoked instead of Allah — whether dead or absent, whether a prophet, a saint, or any other being — cannot answer the one who calls them in times of need. They cannot grant relief, nor can they avert misfortune. Therefore, no one deserves worship except Allah alone. He is the One who hears every plea, responds to every sincere call, and has complete control over all affairs.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
Dear reader, pause and reflect on your own life. When calamity strikes — when illness afflicts you, when grief weighs heavy on your heart, when the doors of provision seem closed — where do you turn? The human heart instinctively seeks a refuge, a helper, a savior. But how many have placed their hopes in created beings who can neither benefit nor harm themselves, let alone others?
Islam invites you to the purest and most direct connection: call upon Allah, the Living, the Self-Sufficient, the All-Powerful. He is closer to you than your own jugular vein. He hears your whispered prayers and knows the secrets of your heart. He is the One who says, "Call upon Me; I will respond to you" (Qur'an 40:60).
So free yourself from the chains of false hopes and misplaced worship. Turn to your Lord with sincerity, and you will find that no harm can touch you except what He wills, and no good can reach you except from His bounty. This is the essence of true faith — a faith that brings peace to the soul and light to the path, both in this world and the Hereafter.
