Tafsir (Explanation):
The verse reveals a profound truth about the intense hostility the disbelievers of Makkah directed against the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). They came very close to succeeding in their plan to agitate and pressure him so severely that he would be compelled to leave his homeland, Makkah. Their aim was to expel him from the city where he was born and raised, hoping to silence the message of truth he carried.
However, Allah protected His Messenger. The disbelievers were prevented from carrying out their expulsion by force; instead, the Prophet left Makkah by Allah’s command, migrating to Madinah as part of the divine plan. The verse then delivers a stern warning: had they actually managed to expel him, they would not have remained in that land after his departure except for a very short time. Their punishment would have descended upon them swiftly, and their victory would have turned into utter ruin.
This verse carries a powerful lesson for all believers: the plots of the enemies of truth may seem formidable, but they are always under Allah’s control. No matter how much they scheme to uproot the message of Islam, Allah’s protection surrounds His righteous servants. The disbelievers’ apparent success is always temporary, and their downfall follows closely when they transgress against the prophets and the believers.
For the believer today, this is a source of immense comfort and hope. When you see the enemies of Islam plotting, spreading falsehood, or trying to suppress the truth, remember that their plans are fragile. Allah has promised victory to His religion and His sincere servants. The history of the Prophet (peace be upon him) is a living proof that even when the whole world seems to conspire against you, Allah’s help is nearer than you think. Hold firm to your faith, trust in Allah’s wisdom, and know that the end is always for the righteous.
