Tafsir (Explanation):
In this profound verse, Allah establishes the ultimate truth of divine guidance and misguidance. He declares that whoever Allah guides to the path of truth, faith, and righteousness — through His mercy, wisdom, and grace — then that person is truly and rightly guided. No one can mislead such a person, for Allah's guidance is absolute and complete. Conversely, whoever Allah causes to go astray — due to their own stubbornness, arrogance, and rejection of the truth after it has been made clear to them — then you, O Messenger, will never find for them any protectors or helpers besides Allah who could guide them, benefit them, or ward off harm from them. This is because all affairs are in Allah's hands alone; no one can change His decree, and no intercessor or ally can override His will.
Then Allah describes the terrifying fate of these misguided ones on the Day of Resurrection. He says that He will gather them and raise them from their graves, dragging them upon their faces — a state of utter humiliation and degradation. They will be raised blind, unable to see anything that could bring them joy or comfort; mute, unable to utter a single word of defense, excuse, or argument; and deaf, unable to hear anything that might benefit them. Their senses — the very means by which human beings perceive and interact with the world — will be rendered completely useless, adding to their torment and despair.
Their final abode and resting place will be Jahannam (Hellfire) — a place of intense heat, scorching flames, and endless punishment. And whenever the fire begins to die down or subside — whenever its flames calm or its intensity lessens — Allah increases them in blazing fire and raging flames. The punishment is not static; it is ever-intensifying, ever-renewing, so that the torment never ceases and never diminishes. This is the just recompense for those who turned away from Allah's guidance in this world and refused to follow His messengers.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
Dear reader, this verse carries a powerful message that should stir every heart. It reminds us that true success and salvation lie in seeking Allah's guidance — and that guidance is available to all who sincerely ask for it and strive for it. Allah says in another verse: *"And those who strive for Us — We will surely guide them to Our ways"* (Al-Ankabut: 69). So never despair of Allah's mercy, and never think that you are beyond His reach. No matter how far you have strayed, the door of repentance is open, and Allah's guidance is near for those who turn to Him with a sincere heart.
At the same time, let this verse be a warning against arrogance and heedlessness. Do not reject the truth when it reaches you, and do not persist in sin thinking that you have time. The Day of Resurrection is real, and the state of those who are raised blind, mute, and deaf upon their faces is a stark reminder of the consequences of turning away from Allah in this life. The wise person is the one who prepares for that Day today — by praying, by seeking knowledge, by doing good deeds, and by calling upon Allah to keep their heart firm upon His guidance.
May Allah guide us all to the straight path, keep our hearts firm upon His religion, and save us from the torment of the Fire. Ameen.
