Word Meanings:

  • "Ba'athnāhum" (بَعَثْنَاهُمْ): We awakened them from their deep sleep; raised them up.
  • "Li-na'lam" (لِنَعْلَمَ): So that We may know — meaning, so that it becomes manifest and evident to creation, for Allah's knowledge is eternal and precedes all things.
  • "Al-ḥizbayn" (الْحِزْبَيْنِ): The two parties or groups that disputed among themselves.
  • "Aḥṣā" (أَحْصَىٰ): More precise, more accurate in counting or calculating.
  • "Amadā" (أَمَدًا): A duration, an extent of time, a term or period.

Tafsir (Explanation):

After the young men of the cave slept for an extraordinarily long period — a sleep that spanned centuries — Allah then awakened them. This awakening was not a random event; it carried profound wisdom. Allah says: *"Then We awakened them so that We might know which of the two parties was more precise in calculating the duration of their stay."*

Now, this "knowing" does not mean that Allah was unaware before and then gained knowledge. Far be it from Him! Allah's knowledge is absolute, eternal, and encompasses everything before it happens. Rather, this expression means that Allah wanted to bring this matter into visible reality — to manifest His eternal knowledge before the eyes of His servants. It was a test for the people of that time, a sign of His power, and a lesson for all of humanity.

The "two parties" refer to the believers who held that the sleep was long — perhaps a day or part of a day — and those who claimed it was much longer, even years. When the young men were awakened, one of them went out to buy food with a silver coin, and the people of the city realized that these were the very youths who had been mentioned in their scriptures. The dispute arose: how long had they actually slept? Some said a day, some said part of a day, and others said Allah knows best. The truth was that they had slept for 309 years.

The verse highlights that the most accurate of the two groups in reckoning the time was the one that humbly deferred to Allah's knowledge, saying: *"Your Lord knows best how long you stayed"* (18:19). This teaches us a beautiful lesson: true precision and wisdom lie not in stubbornly insisting on our own calculations, but in acknowledging that Allah alone possesses complete knowledge.

A Da'wah Reflection:

Dear reader, ponder this magnificent scene: young men who fled for their faith, slept in a cave, and woke to find an entire world transformed. Their story is not merely history — it is a living sign of Allah's absolute power over time, life, and death. Just as He raised them from their sleep, He will raise all of us from our graves on the Day of Judgment. The One who can revive a sleeping body after centuries can certainly revive the dead.

This verse also invites us to reflect on our own "reckoning." If those youths were concerned about the precise duration of their sleep, how much more concerned should we be about the precise state of our deeds? Every moment of our lives is being counted, every breath is being recorded. When we stand before our Lord, we will see exactly what we have sent forward — nothing will be lost, nothing will be forgotten.

Let this story fill your heart with hope and awe. Hope, because Allah's mercy and protection surround His righteous servants in the most unexpected ways. Awe, because His knowledge and power are beyond anything we can imagine. And let it inspire you to be among those who, like the youths of the cave, hold firm to their faith even when the world around them seems overwhelming — for Allah never abandons those who seek His refuge.

📜 Verse 10-14 — Al-Kahf

[Mention] when the youths retreated to the cave and said, "Our Lord, grant us from Yourself mercy and prepare for us from our affair right guidance."
So We cast [a cover of sleep] over their ears within the cave for a number of years.
Then We awakened them that We might show which of the two factions was most precise in calculating what [extent] they had remained in time.
It is We who relate to you, [O Muhammad], their story in truth. Indeed, they were youths who believed in their Lord, and We increased them in guidance.
And We made firm their hearts when they stood up and said, "Our Lord is the Lord of the heavens and the earth. Never will we invoke besides Him any deity. We would have certainly spoken, then, an excessive transgression.
