Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- "Sultanin mubin": A clear, decisive proof or authority—an evident argument that establishes the truth beyond doubt.
- "Iftara": To invent a lie, to fabricate something false and attribute it to another.
- "Alam": The most unjust, the greatest wrongdoer.
Tafsir (Explanation):
The young believers—the companions of the cave—turned to one another and said: "These people of ours—our own community—have taken gods other than Allah. They worship idols and false deities without any proof or evidence to support their actions. Why do they not bring a clear, compelling argument to justify their worship of these gods? They cannot, because no such proof exists. Their worship is built on nothing but blind imitation and baseless assumption."
Then they declared: "Who could be more unjust than one who invents a lie against Allah—claiming that He has partners or rivals in His divinity? Such a person attributes to Allah what is utterly false, and this is the greatest oppression, for it misrepresents the Creator and leads people astray from the truth."
This statement reflects the pure fitrah (natural disposition) of the believers: they recognized that true worship belongs to Allah alone, and that any claim to divinity for other beings requires evidence—evidence that polytheists can never produce. The young men distanced themselves from the falsehood of their people while affirming the justice of Allah, who will never accept the association of partners with Him.
Da'wah Reflection:
This verse teaches us a profound lesson: the truth does not need to be accepted merely because the majority follows it. The young believers stood firm against their entire society, armed with certainty and reason. They challenged falsehood to produce proof—and falsehood, by its very nature, can never offer any.
Dear reader, reflect on your own heart: Do you worship Allah with clear evidence and sincere devotion, or do you follow customs and traditions without questioning their source? The Quran invites you to use your intellect, to seek proof, and to submit only to the One who created you. The path of these young believers led them to Allah's mercy, protection, and honor—so too can your journey of faith lead you to peace in this life and eternal bliss in the Hereafter. Let their courage inspire you to stand for truth, even when surrounded by falsehood, for Allah never abandons those who sincerely seek Him.
