Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- "Rabatnā 'alā qulūbihim": We strengthened and fortified their hearts, binding them with firmness and steadfastness.
- "Shataṭan": An extreme deviation from the truth — a saying that is unjust, excessive, and far beyond the bounds of righteousness.
Tafsir (Explanation):
In this noble verse, Allah tells us about the young men of the cave — the Companions of the Cave — and how He fortified their hearts with unwavering faith and courage. When they stood before the tyrannical king who demanded they bow to idols and abandon the worship of Allah alone, their hearts did not waver. Instead, Allah granted them a profound steadfastness, enabling them to speak the truth boldly and without fear.
They stood firm and declared with absolute clarity: *"Our Lord is the Lord of the heavens and the earth."* In this single statement, they affirmed the oneness of Allah — that He alone is the Creator, Sustainer, and Sovereign of all existence. They rejected every false deity, every invented god, and every object of worship besides Him. Their declaration was not merely words; it was a testimony of their complete reliance on Allah and their willingness to sacrifice everything — including their homes, families, and lives — for His sake.
They then added: *"We will never call upon any god besides Him."* This was a definitive, unshakeable commitment. They understood that to worship anything other than Allah — whether idols, statues, or any created being — would be a grave injustice. They said: *"If we did so, we would have spoken an extreme transgression"* — meaning, we would have uttered a statement that is utterly false, unjust, and far removed from the path of truth and reason.
This verse teaches us a profound lesson: true faith is not merely a feeling in the heart; it is a firm conviction that manifests in courageous action. When believers stand for the truth, Allah strengthens their hearts and grants them the resolve to face even the most daunting challenges. The young men of the cave were not powerful or influential by worldly standards, yet their faith made them mighty. They chose truth over comfort, and Allah honored them with a miraculous story that continues to inspire generations.
Dear reader, reflect on your own heart. When you stand for Islam — whether in your words, your actions, or your daily choices — know that Allah is with you. He will strengthen you just as He strengthened those young believers. Do not fear the disapproval of people when you uphold the truth, for the One who created the heavens and the earth is your Protector. Call upon Him alone, rely on Him alone, and He will never abandon you. Let your heart be firm, your tongue be truthful, and your deeds be sincere — for that is the path of the righteous, and the reward with Allah is beyond imagination.
