Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • لَن تَسْتَطِيعَ (lan tastaṭīʿa): You will never be able to, you will not have the capacity or power to endure.
  • صَبْرًا (ṣabran): Patience, forbearance, self-restraint in the face of what is difficult or displeasing.

Explanation of the Verse:

Here, the righteous servant of Allah, Al-Khiḍr (peace be upon him), responds to Prophet Musa (Moses, peace be upon him) after Musa had requested to accompany him and learn from the knowledge Allah had granted him. Al-Khiḍr’s reply is both a gentle warning and a profound truth: "Indeed, you will never be able to have patience with me."

Why? Because Musa (peace be upon him) possessed the knowledge of the outward, apparent rulings of the Law—what is permissible and what is forbidden, what is just and what is unjust. Al-Khiḍr, however, was given a special knowledge from Allah—knowledge of hidden realities, divine wisdom behind events that appear contradictory to the outward Law. When Musa would witness Al-Khiḍr’s actions—such as scuttling a boat, killing a young boy, or repairing a wall for ungrateful people—he would find them unbearable, for they would seem to violate the very principles Musa was sent to uphold. His nature as a prophet of the Law would compel him to object, and thus patience would be beyond his capacity.

This verse carries a profound lesson: knowledge is not one single path, and Allah grants wisdom to whom He wills. What may appear as a wrong action in one context may be a mercy and justice in another, known only to Allah and those He has taught. It also teaches us humility—that no matter how great our knowledge, there is always a higher wisdom we may not perceive, and that true learning requires patience, trust, and submission to the one who teaches.

A Da‘wah Reflection:

Dear reader, this verse invites you to reflect on the vastness of Allah’s wisdom. How often do we, like Musa, judge situations based on what we see, only to later discover the hidden good behind them? Islam teaches us to trust Allah’s plan, to be patient with His decree, and to seek knowledge with humility. The story of Musa and Al-Khiḍr is a beautiful reminder that our limited vision cannot encompass Allah’s infinite wisdom. So, when life brings trials that seem unjust or confusing, remember: the All-Knowing sees what you do not, and His wisdom is perfect. Embrace patience, for it is the key to unlocking the treasures of divine knowledge and inner peace. And know that the Qur’an is filled with such gems—stories that heal hearts and guide souls to the straight path. Let this verse inspire you to seek knowledge sincerely, to respect those whom Allah has favored with understanding, and to surrender your heart to the wisdom of your Creator.
