And how can you have patience for what you do not encompass in knowledge?"

Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • تَصْبِرَ — to have patience and endurance.
  • لَمْ تُحِطْ بِهِ خُبْرًا — you have not encompassed it with knowledge; i.e., you lack full awareness and comprehension of its inner reality and wisdom.

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse is part of the conversation between Prophet Musa (Moses, peace be upon him) and Al-Khidr, a servant of Allah endowed with special knowledge. Al-Khidr is gently explaining to Musa why his patience would inevitably fail. He says: "How could you bear patiently with matters whose inner wisdom and purpose are completely hidden from you?"

The meaning is profound: Musa (peace be upon him) was a great prophet with immense knowledge, yet Al-Khidr possessed a specific, God-given knowledge of unseen affairs. Musa would judge events by their outward appearance—seeing a ship damaged, a boy killed, or a wall repaired—and would naturally question these actions because he could not see the divine wisdom behind them. Al-Khidr is not criticizing Musa but rather excusing him, acknowledging that human patience is tested when one cannot grasp the "why" behind what one witnesses.

This teaches us a beautiful lesson about the limits of human perception. Our knowledge is finite, while Allah's wisdom is infinite. There are events in our lives—trials, hardships, delays, or even apparent losses—that we struggle to understand. Yet, just as Musa was asked to trust Al-Khidr's hidden knowledge, we are invited to trust Allah's perfect plan. The verse gently reminds us that true patience (sabr) is not merely enduring what we understand, but submitting with tranquility to what we do not yet comprehend, knowing that Allah's wisdom surpasses our limited sight.

A Da'wah Reflection:

Dear reader, this verse carries a timeless message of hope and trust. How often do we find ourselves in situations that make no sense to us? A missed opportunity, an illness, a loss, or a delay—these can shake our hearts. But imagine if you could see the end of the story, the hidden blessings, and the divine wisdom woven through every trial. You would thank Allah for every single moment of difficulty.

Islam teaches us that patience is not passive resignation; it is active trust in Allah's decree. When you cannot "encompass" a situation with your knowledge, remember that Allah encompasses everything with His mercy and wisdom. He sees what you do not see, and He plans what is best for you. So, hold on to patience, for after every hardship comes ease, and behind every closed door lies a thousand open ones—if only you trust in the One who knows all. Let this verse soften your heart and increase your reliance on Allah, for He is the Best of Planners.
