  • "Hal attabi'uka" (هَلْ أَتَّبِعُكَ): "Shall I follow you" – a polite, humble request for permission.
  • "Ala an tu'allimani" (عَلَى أَن تُعَلِّمَنِ): "On the condition that you teach me" – indicating that the follower seeks knowledge as the sole purpose of companionship.
  • "Mimma 'ullimta" (مِمَّا عُلِّمْتَ): "From what you have been taught" – acknowledging that the teacher possesses divinely granted knowledge.
  • "Rushdan" (رُشْدًا): "Right guidance" – knowledge that leads to truth, wisdom, and correct conduct.

Explanation of the Verse:

In this noble verse, we witness a profound moment of humility and sincere pursuit of knowledge. Prophet Musa (Moses, peace be upon him), one of the greatest messengers of Allah, approached a servant of Allah who had been granted special knowledge from the Divine. Despite Musa's own lofty rank and prophethood, he did not let pride or status prevent him from seeking beneficial knowledge from another.

Musa's words reflect the essence of true learning: he asked permission to accompany this righteous servant, not for worldly gains, but solely to be taught "from what he had been taught" – that is, the divinely inspired wisdom and guidance that leads one to the path of truth and righteousness. The word "rushdan" here signifies knowledge that brings one closer to Allah, corrects one's understanding, and guides one's actions toward what is right.

This verse beautifully illustrates several timeless lessons for every believer:

First, knowledge is a treasure that knows no boundaries of rank or status. Even a prophet of Musa's caliber recognized that wisdom can be found with others, and he humbled himself to learn. This teaches us to remain ever humble and open to learning from anyone, regardless of their apparent station in life.

Second, the pursuit of knowledge must be accompanied by proper adab (etiquette). Musa did not demand or assume; he asked politely, "Shall I follow you?" This demonstrates that the seeker of knowledge should approach teachers with respect, gentleness, and a willingness to submit to their guidance.

Third, the purpose of seeking knowledge should be noble – to attain "rushdan," the guidance that leads to righteousness and closeness to Allah. When we learn with sincere intentions, Allah blesses our efforts and opens doors of understanding that we never imagined.

This verse also serves as a beautiful reminder of the value of companionship in the path of faith. Surrounding ourselves with righteous and knowledgeable people is a means of spiritual growth. Just as Musa sought the company of a wise servant of Allah, we too should seek the company of those who can teach us what benefits our religion and our worldly affairs in accordance with the Divine will.

Dear believer, let this verse inspire you to never stop seeking beneficial knowledge, to approach learning with humility and good manners, and to always purify your intentions – seeking that knowledge which leads you to the straight path and the pleasure of your Lord. For indeed, Allah has placed wisdom and guidance in many places, and the one who humbles themselves to learn will find treasures beyond measure.
