Key Words and Phrases:
- Bayna al-Saddayn (بَيْنَ السَّدَّيْنِ): Between the two barriers or mountains. These were two great mountain ranges that formed a natural passage or gap between them.
- Min dūnihimā (مِن دُونِهِمَا): Beyond them, or on the other side of these two mountains.
- Lā yakādūna yafqahūna qawlan (لَا يَكَادُونَ يَفْقَهُونَ قَوْلًا): They could scarcely understand any speech. This means they had a very limited, almost non-existent, ability to comprehend the language of others, and even their own speech was difficult to understand.
The Interpretation:
After his long and arduous journey, Dhul-Qarnayn continued his mission of establishing justice and helping the oppressed. He pressed on until he reached a narrow mountain pass, a natural gap between two towering mountain ranges that served as a barrier against the outside world. There, on the far side of these mountains, he came upon a people who were entirely isolated from the rest of humanity. These people were so isolated that they could barely understand the speech of anyone outside their own community. Their language was so distinct, and their contact with other nations so limited, that they struggled to grasp even the simplest words spoken by a stranger. This description highlights their vulnerability and their desperate need for assistance, as they lived in a state of profound seclusion and simplicity.
A Call to Reflection and Gratitude:
This verse is a powerful reminder of the diversity of Allah's creation. He created different peoples, with different languages, colors, and cultures, so that they may come to know one another and cooperate in righteousness. Just as Dhul-Qualnayn did not mock or ignore this isolated community because of their limited understanding, we too must approach others with compassion and patience. Their inability to communicate was not a sign of inferiority, but rather a test of their circumstances. And when Dhul-Qualnayn encountered them, he did not turn away—he listened, he understood their plight, and he prepared to help them. This is the beautiful character of a believer: to be a source of strength and support for those who are weak, to be a bridge of understanding for those who are isolated, and to use whatever power and resources Allah has granted us to ease the burdens of others. Let us ask ourselves: how can we be a helping hand to those around us, even to those who seem different from us? The answer lies in the mercy and wisdom that Allah has placed in our hearts, and the guidance of His Book.
