Explanation of the Verse:
When Dhul-Qarnayn reached the region between two mountains, he found a people who could barely understand his language. Through their interpreter, they addressed him with a plea: "O Dhul-Qarnayn, indeed Yājūj and Mājūj are great corrupters in the land." These two nations were notorious for their aggression—they would raid the surrounding areas, kill the innocent, terrorize the people, destroy their crops, and spread chaos and mischief wherever they went. Their corruption was not limited to one form; it included bloodshed, theft, and the destruction of livelihoods, making life unbearable for the peaceful communities nearby.
The people then made him an offer: "Shall we pay you a tribute—collecting wealth from among ourselves—on the condition that you build a barrier between us and them?" They were willing to give their hard-earned money, not for personal gain or luxury, but for the sake of protection and security. They recognized Dhul-Qarnayn's power, justice, and capability, and they trusted that he alone could shield them from this overwhelming threat.
This verse beautifully illustrates a profound truth: when a just and capable leader emerges, people are willing to sacrifice their wealth for the greater good. It also shows that the primary duty of a ruler is to establish security and prevent corruption, even at great cost. The people did not ask Dhul-Qarnayn to fight for them out of his own resources; rather, they offered their own contributions, demonstrating their sincerity and their deep desire for peace.
As believers, we learn from this story the importance of cooperation between the community and their leaders in confronting evil. When corruption spreads, it is not the time for indifference or selfishness—it is a time for unity, sacrifice, and collective action. The people of that region understood that their wealth meant nothing if their lives, families, and lands were not safe. They prioritized their faith, their safety, and their moral values over material possessions.
This narrative also reminds us of the mercy of Allah, who sent Dhul-Qarnayn as a means of protection for these people. It encourages us to always seek righteous leadership and to support those who work for justice, while also reminding us that true security comes from Allah alone. The story invites us to reflect: are we willing to contribute our resources and efforts to protect our communities from moral and physical corruption? Are we ready to stand against evil, even if it costs us something dear?
May Allah guide us to be among those who strive for peace, justice, and the protection of the weak, and may He grant us leaders who uphold righteousness and shield us from harm.
