Word Meanings:

  • Al-Mawali (الْمَوَالِي): The close relatives, kinsfolk, or heirs — specifically those who would take over his responsibilities after his death.
  • Min Warā’ī (مِن وَرَائِي): Literally "from behind me," meaning after my death or in my absence.
  • Āqiran (عَاقِرًا): Barren, infertile, unable to bear children.
  • Hab lī (هَبْ لِي): Grant me, bestow upon me — a request for a free gift from Allah, not something earned.
  • Min Ladunka (مِن لَّدُنكَ): From Your own presence, from Your special grace and mercy.
  • Walīyan (وَلِيًّا): A successor, a protector, one who takes charge of affairs — here, a righteous child who would carry on the mission.

Tafsir (Explanation):

This verse captures the heartfelt supplication of Prophet Zakariyyā (peace be upon him), a moment of profound sincerity and deep concern for the future of Allah's religion. He was an elderly man, advanced in years, and his wife was barren — yet he turned to Allah with complete trust, asking for something that seemed impossible by natural means.

Zakariyyā explains his state: "I feared my relatives after me." He was not afraid for his own legacy or worldly possessions — rather, he feared that his kinsmen, who would inherit his position, might not uphold the trust of Allah's religion. He had witnessed how the Children of Israel had corrupted their faith, killed prophets, and distorted divine teachings. He saw that his relatives were preoccupied with worldly matters and might not carry the torch of guidance with the same devotion and courage. His heart ached at the thought of the religion of Allah being neglected or altered after his departure.

Adding to his distress, his wife was barren and could not give him a child. Yet, in this very moment of apparent hopelessness, he did not despair of Allah's mercy. Instead, he turned to the Creator of all causes and effects, saying: "So grant me from Your own presence a successor." He asked for a gift that would come directly from Allah's grace — not through natural means, but through divine power. He requested a child who would be a true heir to his prophetic mission, one who would protect the faith, guide the people, and continue the call to Allah.

This beautiful supplication teaches us a profound lesson: when human means fail, the Divine power remains unlimited. Zakariyyā did not rely on his own ability or the laws of nature; he relied on the One who created nature itself. He asked Allah for a "walī" — a righteous helper and successor — because he understood that the future of the religion is more important than any personal comfort or legacy.

Da‘wah Reflection:

This verse is a living example of how a believer should prioritize the cause of Allah above all else. Zakariyyā's concern was not about who would inherit his wealth or status — it was about who would carry the message of truth after him. This teaches us to care deeply about the continuity of good in this world. Every believer should ask: What am I leaving behind? Is there someone who will continue the work of guiding others to Allah, teaching the Quran, and upholding justice?

Moreover, this verse gives hope to every person facing obstacles in life. When the doors of worldly means seem closed, the door of Allah's grace remains wide open. Zakariyyā was old, his wife was barren — yet Allah answered his call and gave him Yahyā (John the Baptist), a prophet of immense purity and wisdom. So never underestimate the power of sincere du‘ā’. When you feel helpless, that is exactly the moment to turn to Allah with full reliance, for He is the One who says to a thing, "Be," and it is.

Let us also learn from Zakariyyā's selflessness. He did not ask for a child for his own comfort or to have someone to carry his name. He asked for a child who would serve Allah's religion. This is the highest level of ambition — to want something not for oneself, but for the sake of Allah and His cause. May Allah grant us such pure intentions and such sincere hearts.

When he called to his Lord a private supplication.
He said, "My Lord, indeed my bones have weakened, and my head has filled with white, and never have I been in my supplication to You, my Lord, unhappy.
And indeed, I fear the successors after me, and my wife has been barren, so give me from Yourself an heir
Who will inherit me and inherit from the family of Jacob. And make him, my Lord, pleasing [to You]."
[He was told], "O Zechariah, indeed We give you good tidings of a boy whose name will be John. We have not assigned to any before [this] name."
