Surah Al-Baqarah — Verse 11

Tafsir (Explanation):

When the believers — or any sincere advisor — say to the hypocrites and those who spread corruption: "Do not cause mischief on earth," meaning: do not spread disbelief, do not block people from the path of faith, do not betray the secrets of the believers, and do not ally with the enemies of truth, they reply with arrogance and self-deception: "We are only reformers! We are the ones who set things right!"

But this claim is a blatant lie. Their actions — sowing doubt, mocking the faithful, and supporting corruption — prove the opposite of what they say. They are not reformers; they are corrupters, yet they do not perceive it. Their hearts are sealed, and their vision is clouded, so they genuinely believe their own falsehood.

This verse teaches us a profound lesson about human nature: the most dangerous corruption is that which wears the mask of reform. The hypocrites of every era justify their wrongdoings by claiming noble intentions. They call their betrayal "diplomacy," their mockery "criticism," and their obstruction of good "pragmatism." But Allah exposes their true nature, reminding us that faith requires honesty — first with ourselves, then with others.

As believers, we must be vigilant: never let our desires blind us to the difference between right and wrong. And when we advise others, we should do so with wisdom and gentleness, for the goal is not to humiliate but to guide. The Quran here also consoles the believers — do not be disheartened when your sincere advice is met with denial and false claims. Allah sees all, and He alone is the ultimate Judge. Your duty is only to convey the truth with patience and clarity, and to trust that the One who revealed this Book is fully aware of every heart's hidden intentions.
