Word Meanings:
- A-tuhājjūnana (أَتُحَاجُّونَنَا): Do you argue or dispute with us?
- Fī Allāh (فِي اللَّهِ): Concerning Allah — i.e., about His religion, His oneness, and His exclusive right to worship.
- Mukhliṣūn (مُخْلِصُونَ): Sincerely devoted, purifying one’s faith and deeds solely for Allah, free from any form of polytheism or showing off.
Explanation of the Verse:
O Prophet, say to the People of the Book — the Jews and the Christians — who claim that they are more deserving of Allah’s religion and closer to Him because their scriptures came earlier: “Do you argue with us about Allah and His religion?” This is a rhetorical question that exposes the futility of their argument. For Allah is the Lord of all creation — He is our Lord and your Lord alike. He does not belong exclusively to any nation or group; His mercy and lordship encompass everyone equally. Therefore, your claim of superiority based on lineage or antiquity of scripture holds no weight before Him.
Each of us will be judged by our own deeds. We have our deeds and you have yours — we are not accountable for your actions, nor are you accountable for ours. Every soul will reap what it has sown, and no one can benefit from another’s works on the Day of Judgment.
As for us, we are sincerely devoted to Allah alone — we worship Him with pure faith, without associating any partner with Him, and without directing our acts of worship to anyone besides Him. We do not claim that He has a son, nor do we elevate any human being to His divine station. Our hearts are purified from every form of shirk, and our deeds are free from hypocrisy and showing off.
How then can you claim to be more deserving of Allah while you associate partners with Him, and we are the ones who are sincere to Him alone? The proof of truth is not in the age of a book or the antiquity of a tradition, but in the purity of faith and the sincerity of worship.
A Call to Reflection:
This verse carries a profound lesson for every seeker of truth: true honor before Allah lies not in inherited labels, inherited traditions, or ancestral pride, but in sincere devotion and righteous action. It invites us to rise above sectarian arrogance and tribal boasting, and to focus on what truly matters — purifying our hearts for Allah and competing in good deeds. When we understand that Allah is the Lord of all, we realize that the path to Him is open to every sincere soul, regardless of race, color, or lineage. Let this verse inspire you to examine your own sincerity: is your worship truly for Allah alone, or is it tainted by the desire for praise, status, or worldly gain? The key to Allah’s acceptance is not in claiming His religion, but in living it with pure devotion.
