Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Sibghah (صِبْغَةَ): Literally means "dye" or "color." Here it refers to the religion and natural disposition (Fitrah) of Allah, which He has instilled in every human being. It is called a "dye" because just as a dye colors a garment, the true faith colors the heart, soul, and actions of a believer.
  • Man ahsanu (وَمَنْ أَحْسَنُ): "And who is better..." — a rhetorical question meaning "no one is better."
  • Abidoon (عَابِدُونَ): Worshippers, obedient servants, devoted to Allah alone.

Tafsir (Explanation):

Allah commands His believing servants to adhere firmly to His religion — the pure faith of Islam — which is the natural disposition (Fitrah) upon which He created all of humanity. This religion is not something foreign or burdensome; rather, it is the very nature that aligns with the human soul, its innate longing for truth, justice, and purpose. Just as a garment takes on the color of the dye it is immersed in, so too does the believer's heart, speech, and conduct become colored by the light of faith, manifesting in every aspect of life.

Allah then poses a profound rhetorical question: "And who is better than Allah in religion?" The answer is self-evident — no one. There is no creed, no philosophy, no man-made system that can rival the perfection of Allah's religion. His religion is the only one that is completely in harmony with human nature, bringing benefit to the individual and society while warding off corruption and harm. It purifies the soul, uplifts the spirit, and guides humanity to success in this world and the Hereafter.

The verse concludes with the believer's declaration: "And we are His worshippers." This is not merely a statement of fact but a pledge of devotion — a commitment to worship Allah alone, without any partner, and to submit to His will in all matters. It is the natural response of a heart that recognizes the greatness of its Creator and the perfection of His guidance.

A Call to the Reader:

Dear reader, reflect on this beautiful verse. Allah is calling you to the pure, untainted faith that matches your very nature. You do not need to search far and wide for truth — it is already embedded within you, in the Fitrah that Allah placed in every soul. Islam is not a burden; it is a return to who you truly are. When you embrace it, your life takes on a beautiful color — the color of faith, peace, and purpose. No other system, ideology, or way of life can offer what Allah's religion offers: a complete, balanced, and fulfilling way to live. So answer the call of your Creator, submit to Him with love and sincerity, and join the ranks of those who proudly declare: "We are His worshippers." This is the path of true success, both in this world and in the eternal life to come.

📜 Verse 136-140 — Al-Baqarah

Say, [O believers], "We have believed in Allah and what has been revealed to us and what has been revealed to Abraham and Ishmael and Isaac and Jacob and the Descendants and what was given to Moses and Jesus and what was given to the prophets from their Lord. We make no distinction between any of them, and we are Muslims [in submission] to Him."
So if they believe in the same as you believe in, then they have been [rightly] guided; but if they turn away, they are only in dissension, and Allah will be sufficient for you against them. And He is the Hearing, the Knowing.
[And say, "Ours is] the religion of Allah. And who is better than Allah in [ordaining] religion? And we are worshippers of Him."
Say, [O Muhammad], "Do you argue with us about Allah while He is our Lord and your Lord? For us are our deeds, and for you are your deeds. And we are sincere [in deed and intention] to Him."
Or do you say that Abraham and Ishmael and Isaac and Jacob and the Descendants were Jews or Christians? Say, "Are you more knowing or is Allah?" And who is more unjust than one who conceals a testimony he has from Allah? And Allah is not unaware of what you do.
