Key Words and Their Meanings:

  • Kutiba (كُتِبَ): It was prescribed, ordained, or made obligatory as a divine decree.
  • As-Siyam (الصِّيَامُ): Fasting — abstaining from food, drink, and other specific acts from dawn until sunset with a sincere intention for Allah.
  • Tattaqun (تَتَّقُونَ): To attain *taqwa* — God-consciousness, piety, and the guarding of oneself against sin and Allah’s displeasure.

The Interpretation:

O you who have truly believed in Allah and His Messenger, and who strive to live by His commandments — Allah has made fasting obligatory upon you, just as He made it obligatory upon the nations who came before you, from the prophets and their followers. This is not a new burden, but a continuation of a divine tradition that has always been part of the path of faith. The purpose behind this sacred obligation is that you may attain *taqwa* — a profound state of God-consciousness that shields you from sin and draws you closer to your Lord. Through fasting, you learn to restrain your desires, purify your soul, and build a protective barrier between yourselves and disobedience, so that you may worship Allah alone with sincerity and devotion.

A Call to Reflection and Action:

Dear believer, contemplate the beauty of this verse: your Lord, in His infinite mercy, does not simply command you to fast — He tells you that this act of worship is a means to reach the highest station of faith: *taqwa*. Fasting is not merely hunger and thirst; it is a school that trains your heart to remember Allah at every moment, to feel compassion for the poor, to master your desires, and to taste the sweetness of obedience. And know that you are part of a long chain of believers — from Adam to Noah, from Abraham to Moses, from Jesus to Muhammad (peace be upon them all) — who were honored with this same command. So embrace this blessed month with joy and gratitude, for it is a gift from your Creator, a golden opportunity to wipe away your sins, elevate your rank, and draw nearer to the One who loves you more than a mother loves her child. Let your fast be not just an abstention from food, but a complete devotion of your heart, tongue, and limbs to what pleases Allah — and you will surely find in it a light that illuminates your path in this world and the next.

📜 Verse 181-185 — Al-Baqarah

Then whoever alters the bequest after he has heard it - the sin is only upon those who have altered it. Indeed, Allah is Hearing and Knowing.
But if one fears from the bequeather [some] error or sin and corrects that which is between them, there is no sin upon him. Indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.
O you who have believed, decreed upon you is fasting as it was decreed upon those before you that you may become righteous -
[Fasting for] a limited number of days. So whoever among you is ill or on a journey [during them] - then an equal number of days [are to be made up]. And upon those who are able [to fast, but with hardship] - a ransom [as substitute] of feeding a poor person [each day]. And whoever volunteers excess - it is better for him. But to fast is best for you, if you only knew.
The month of Ramadhan [is that] in which was revealed the Qur'an, a guidance for the people and clear proofs of guidance and criterion. So whoever sights [the new moon of] the month, let him fast it; and whoever is ill or on a journey - then an equal number of other days. Allah intends for you ease and does not intend for you hardship and [wants] for you to complete the period and to glorify Allah for that [to] which He has guided you; and perhaps you will be grateful.
