Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • اعْبُدُوا (u'budu): Worship, devote yourselves exclusively to Him with humility, submission, and obedience.
(Rabbakum): Your Lord—the One who creates, nurtures, sustains, and governs all affairs with perfect wisdom and mercy.
  • خَلَقَكُمْ (khalaqakum): Brought you into existence from nothing, fashioned you, and gave you life.
  • لَعَلَّكُمْ تَتَّقُونَ (la'allakum tattaqoon): So that you may attain God-consciousness (taqwa)—a protective shield that guards you from His displeasure and punishment.

Tafsir (Explanation):

This is a direct and universal call from Allah—the Most Merciful—addressed to all of humanity, regardless of race, tribe, or time. It is a call that reaches every ear and every heart: *"O mankind, worship your Lord."*

The word "worship" here means to single out Allah alone in all acts of devotion—prayer, supplication, love, hope, fear, and obedience—and to submit fully to His commands while avoiding what He has forbidden. This worship is not a burden imposed upon you; rather, it is the very purpose of your existence and the key to your peace and success.

Allah then reminds you of the reason that makes this worship both an obligation and a privilege: "Who created you and those before you." He is the One who brought you into being from absolute nothingness, shaped you in the womb, provided for you, and gave you all that you possess. He also created the generations that came before you—from Adam to your own parents—and He will remain after all have passed away. This reminder humbles the heart and awakens gratitude: how can one who was created by Allah turn away from Him?

The verse concludes with a beautiful purpose: "So that you may attain taqwa." Taqwa is not merely fear; it is a profound awareness of Allah that fills the believer's heart—a consciousness that makes him careful to obey Allah and avoid His displeasure, just as one would protect himself from a dangerous fire. It is the light by which the believer walks through life, the provision that carries him to eternal success, and the quality that elevates him in the sight of Allah.

This call is an invitation of love and mercy. Allah does not need your worship—you are the one who needs Him. By worshipping Him, you find true freedom from the servitude of desires, people, and worldly illusions. You connect with your Creator, the source of all goodness, and you prepare for yourself a life of tranquility here and everlasting bliss in the Hereafter.

So respond to this call with an open heart. Let your worship be sincere, your obedience be constant, and your hope in His mercy be firm. For the One who created you with such perfection will never abandon you when you turn to Him in devotion. He is the Lord who loves to be worshipped, and He rewards those who seek Him with the greatest of rewards: His pleasure and His Paradise.

📜 Verse 19-23 — Al-Baqarah

Or [it is] like a rainstorm from the sky within which is darkness, thunder and lightning. They put their fingers in their ears against the thunderclaps in dread of death. But Allah is encompassing of the disbelievers.
The lightning almost snatches away their sight. Every time it lights [the way] for them, they walk therein; but when darkness comes over them, they stand [still]. And if Allah had willed, He could have taken away their hearing and their sight. Indeed, Allah is over all things competent.
O mankind, worship your Lord, who created you and those before you, that you may become righteous -
[He] who made for you the earth a bed [spread out] and the sky a ceiling and sent down from the sky, rain and brought forth thereby fruits as provision for you. So do not attribute to Allah equals while you know [that there is nothing similar to Him].
And if you are in doubt about what We have sent down upon Our Servant [Muhammad], then produce a surah the like thereof and call upon your witnesses other than Allah, if you should be truthful.
