Explanation of the Verse:
The lightning in this powerful parable nearly snatches away their sight due to its intense, overwhelming brightness. Yet, despite this, whenever the lightning flashes and lights up their path, they take a few hesitant steps forward in that brief illumination. But the moment the darkness returns and envelops them, they stand frozen, unable to move, lost and confused in the gloom. This is the exact state of the hypocrites: they waver between moments of clarity and confusion, never fully committing to the light of guidance.
If Allah had willed, He could have completely destroyed their hearing and their sight — just as He allowed them to lose the inner perception of truth. He is fully capable of doing so at any moment, for His power knows no bounds. Nothing in the heavens or the earth can escape His might, and His decree is absolute.
This verse paints a vivid picture of the hypocrite's spiritual condition. The Quran is like the rain that brings life, the thunder represents its warnings and admonitions, and the lightning symbolizes the flashes of truth that occasionally reach their hearts. But just as the traveler in the storm gains no real benefit from the lightning — only brief glimpses followed by deeper darkness — the hypocrites gain no lasting benefit from the truth they encounter. They see it, they understand it momentarily, but they refuse to embrace it, and so they remain in perpetual uncertainty and fear.
The deeper lesson for every believer is profound: do not be like those who only follow the light when it is convenient, but rather be steadfast in your faith, walking firmly on the path of guidance even when the road seems dark. Allah's power is complete, and He has given you the gift of faith — cherish it, protect it, and let it illuminate your entire life, not just fleeting moments.
A Da'wah Reflection:
How beautiful is this Quranic imagery that speaks directly to the human heart! Allah describes the hypocrites in a way that makes us reflect on our own sincerity. Are we like those who only move when the light is bright and comfortable, but freeze when trials come? Or are we among those whose hearts are firmly anchored in faith, walking steadily through both ease and hardship?
The verse ends with a powerful reminder: "Indeed, Allah is over all things competent." This is not just a statement of power — it is a source of immense comfort. The same Allah who controls the lightning and the thunder, who gives sight and takes it away, is the One who watches over you. Trust Him, rely on Him, and let your heart find peace in His decree. For when you truly believe in His power and wisdom, no darkness can ever overwhelm you, and every flash of light becomes a step closer to His eternal mercy.
