Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Allā Tattabiʿan (أَلَّا تَتَّبِعَنِ): "That you did not follow me" — meaning, what prevented you from coming after me and joining me?
  • Afaʿaṣayta Amrī (أَفَعَصَيْتَ أَمْرِي): "Did you then disobey my command?" — referring to the instruction Musa (Moses) had given to Harun (Aaron) to guide the people and uphold the truth.

Tafsir (Explanation):

In this verse, Prophet Musa (peace be upon him) addresses his brother Harun with a tone of deep concern and reproach after returning from the Mount of Tur and finding his people worshipping the calf. He asks: "What prevented you, O Harun, when you saw them going astray from their religion, from following me and leaving them behind? Did you disobey my command?"

The command referred to here is the one Musa had given Harun before his departure: to act as his deputy over the Children of Israel, to guide them, to maintain righteousness, and to oppose corruption. Musa's question is not merely an expression of anger, but a call to accountability — a reminder that leadership carries responsibility, and that standing firm upon the truth is a sacred duty. Harun, as we know from the broader context, had indeed tried his best to stop the people, but they overpowered him. Yet Musa's question here serves to highlight the seriousness of the matter and the importance of unwavering commitment to Allah's command, even in the face of overwhelming opposition.

This verse teaches us a profound lesson: that those entrusted with authority — whether prophets, scholars, or leaders — must never compromise on the principles of faith. It also shows the beauty of brotherhood in Islam, where even prophets hold each other to account with love and sincerity, seeking only the pleasure of Allah. The believer is reminded that obedience to Allah and His messengers takes precedence over all else, and that true success lies in clinging to the guidance of the Qur'an and the Sunnah, no matter the trials we face. Let this be a call to every Muslim to reflect on their own responsibilities — in their families, communities, and societies — and to strive with patience and firmness in upholding the truth, trusting that Allah is with those who are steadfast.
