Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

(What prevented you): What stopped you or held you back from acting.
(When you saw them go astray): When you witnessed them deviating from the path of truth and worshipping the calf instead of Allah.

Explanation of the Verse:

In this verse, Prophet Musa (Moses, peace be upon him) addresses his brother Prophet Harun (Aaron, peace be upon him) with a tone of questioning and gentle reproach after returning from the meeting with his Lord and finding his people worshipping the golden calf. Musa asks: "O Harun, what prevented you, when you clearly saw them going astray from the true religion and falling into the worship of a mere statue, from following me and joining me immediately? Why did you not leave them and come to inform me of what had happened? Did you disobey my command regarding what I entrusted you with — to act as my deputy over my people, to guide them, and to reform their affairs in my absence?"

The question carries deep meaning: Musa had appointed Harun as his successor and instructed him to uphold righteousness and prevent corruption. When Harun witnessed the deviation, he chose to remain among the people to try to correct them, but Musa's question here highlights the severity of the situation and the importance of taking decisive action against misguidance. It also reflects the profound responsibility of leadership and the duty to confront error firmly.

A Da'wah Reflection:

This verse teaches us a timeless lesson about the weight of responsibility upon those who guide others. When we see people around us drifting away from the path of Allah — whether through sin, neglect of prayer, or the worship of worldly desires — we cannot remain silent or passive. Like Musa asked his brother, we must ask ourselves: What prevents us from speaking the truth? What stops us from advising and correcting? The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "Whoever among you sees an evil, let him change it with his hand; if he cannot, then with his tongue; if he cannot, then with his heart — and that is the weakest of faith." This verse inspires us to be proactive in calling to goodness, to stand firm against falsehood, and to never abandon our duty toward our families, communities, and the Ummah. Let us be among those who, when they see deviation, respond with wisdom, courage, and sincerity — for the sake of Allah alone. And let us remember that true leadership is not about titles, but about fulfilling the trust placed upon us with patience and steadfastness, just as Harun did, and just as Musa expected from his brother.

📜 Verse 90-94 — Taha

And Aaron had already told them before [the return of Moses], "O my people, you are only being tested by it, and indeed, your Lord is the Most Merciful, so follow me and obey my order."
They said, "We will never cease being devoted to the calf until Moses returns to us."
[Moses] said, "O Aaron, what prevented you, when you saw them going astray,
From following me? Then have you disobeyed my order?"
[Aaron] said, "O son of my mother, do not seize [me] by my beard or by my head. Indeed, I feared that you would say, 'You caused division among the Children of Israel, and you did not observe [or await] my word.' "
