Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • "Baṣurtu" (بَصُرْتُ): I perceived/saw with insight and knowledge, not just with the eyes.
  • "Qabaḍt" (قَبَضْتُ): I took/grasped with my hand.
  • "Athar ar-Rasūl" (أَثَرِ الرَّسُولِ): The trace or footprint of the Messenger — referring here to the hoofprint of the horse of Angel Jibrīl (Gabriel), peace be upon him.
  • "Nabadhtuhā" (نَبَذْتُهَا): I threw/cast it away.
  • "Sawwalat" (سَوَّلَتْ): Made something appear fair and attractive; embellished it.

Tafsir (Explanation):

When Prophet Mūsā (Moses), peace be upon him, returned from the meeting with his Lord and found his people worshipping the golden calf, he confronted the Sāmirī (the Samaritan) who had crafted it. In response, the Sāmirī confessed: "I saw what they did not see." He had witnessed the Angel Jibrīl, peace be upon him, riding his horse at the moment when the sea parted and Pharaoh and his army were drowned. While the people of Israel were overwhelmed by the miracle of their salvation, the Sāmirī's eyes were fixed on something else — he saw the hoofprint of Jibrīl's horse and took a handful of dust from that sacred trace. He then cast that dust onto the molten gold that had been shaped into the form of a calf, and by the will of Allah, that inanimate form began to emit a lowing sound — a test and a trial for the Children of Israel.

Then the Sāmirī added a telling confession: "Thus did my soul make this deed seem fair to me." He admitted that his own lower self — the soul that inclines toward evil — had beautified this act in his eyes, making him believe he was doing something clever or even righteous. But in truth, it was a grave misguidance that led an entire nation astray.

A Call to Reflection:

This verse carries profound lessons for every believer. First, it shows how a person can witness the greatest signs of Allah and still be led astray by their own desires. The Sāmirī saw the same miracles as everyone else, yet his heart was not purified — so he turned a blessing into a curse. How often do we see the truth, yet allow our whims and desires to distort it?

Second, the verse teaches us to be honest with ourselves. The Sāmirī admitted that his soul had deceived him. True repentance begins with self-awareness — recognizing when our desires have led us astray and turning back to Allah before the harm spreads to others.

Third, it reminds us that following the Prophet — in this case, Mūsā, peace be upon him — is the only path to safety. The Sāmirī thought he was being clever by taking something from the "trace of the Messenger," but he abandoned the Messenger himself. True success lies not in seeking shortcuts or mystical formulas, but in obeying Allah and His messengers with sincerity and humility.

May Allah protect us from the whispers of our own souls and keep us steadfast on the straight path. And let us always remember: the soul that beautifies sin is the greatest enemy we face — but with sincere repentance, sincere faith, and sincere obedience, Allah's mercy is greater than all our failings.

[Aaron] said, "O son of my mother, do not seize [me] by my beard or by my head. Indeed, I feared that you would say, 'You caused division among the Children of Israel, and you did not observe [or await] my word.' "
95قَالَ فَمَا خَطْبُكَ يَا سَامِرِيُّ
[Moses] said, "And what is your case, O Samiri?"

[Moses] said, "Then go. And indeed, it is [decreed] for you in [this] life to say, 'No contact.' And indeed, you have an appointment [in the Hereafter] you will not fail to keep. And look at your 'god' to which you remained devoted. We will surely burn it and blow it into the sea with a blast.
98إِنَّمَا إِلَٰهُكُمُ اللَّهُ الَّذِي لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ ۚ وَسِعَ كُلَّ شَيْءٍ عِلْمًا
Your god is only Allah, except for whom there is no deity. He has encompassed all things in knowledge."
