Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Their Meanings:
- Ummah (أُمَّة): Here it means "religion" or "way of life" — the path that binds people together in belief and practice.
- Wāḥidah (وَاحِدَة): One, single, unified — indicating that there is no division or multiplicity in the true religion.
- Fa'budūn (فَاعْبُدُون): "So worship Me" — the command to devote all acts of worship exclusively to Allah alone.
Explanation of the Verse:
In this profound verse, Allah addresses all of humanity — from the first prophet to the last — declaring that their religion is one single religion: Islam. This is the religion of complete submission to Allah, which means surrendering oneself to His will, obeying His commands, and worshipping Him alone without any partner. All the prophets — from Adam, Noah, Abraham, Moses, Jesus, to Muhammad (peace be upon them all) — were sent with the same core message: the Oneness of Allah and sincere devotion to Him.
The verse then establishes the ultimate reason for this unity: "And I am your Lord, so worship Me." Since Allah is the Creator, Sustainer, and Sovereign of all that exists, He alone deserves our worship, gratitude, and obedience. This is not merely a command — it is a natural response to the reality that He is our true Lord. The worship He requires is not limited to rituals; it encompasses every aspect of life — our intentions, actions, words, and even our thoughts — all directed to please Him alone.
This verse beautifully unites all of humanity under one banner: the banner of monotheism. It abolishes all false religions, superstitions, and invented paths, affirming that the only acceptable way before Allah is the way of complete submission to Him. It is a call to every soul to recognize its true purpose — to know its Lord and to worship Him with sincerity and love.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
Dear reader, reflect on the beauty of this verse: your Lord is not distant or unknown. He has introduced Himself to you and invited you to a direct relationship with Him. The religion He has chosen for you is not a burden — it is a mercy, a path of peace, and a source of true happiness. When you worship Allah alone, you free yourself from the chains of false gods, desires, and worldly fears. You find tranquility in knowing that your affairs are in the hands of the Most Merciful.
So, let your heart respond to this divine call: "And I am your Lord, so worship Me." Make your life a living worship — pray, give charity, speak the truth, be kind to others, and seek His pleasure in everything you do. This is the path of the prophets, the path of success in this world and the Hereafter. Embrace it with love, and you will find that Allah is always near, always listening, and always ready to guide you.
