Word Meanings:

  • "Fīmā taraktu" — In what I have left behind, meaning what I have neglected or failed to do during my life.
  • "Kallā" — An emphatic negation, meaning "No indeed!" or "Absolutely not!" It is a firm refusal of the request.
  • "Barzakh" — A barrier or partition; in this context, it refers to the intermediate state between death and the Day of Resurrection, which is the grave.
  • "Min warā'ihim" — Literally "behind them," but here it means "ahead of them," i.e., awaiting them in their future.

Explanation of the Verse:

When death approaches a person who has lived in negligence and disobedience, and he sees the reality of the Hereafter with his own eyes, he suddenly cries out, pleading: "My Lord, send me back to the world! Perhaps I will do good deeds in what I have left behind — in the life I wasted, the years I spent in heedlessness, and the obligations I neglected." He promises to make amends, to pray, to give charity, to treat people kindly, and to follow the truth.

But the response comes swiftly and decisively: "Kallā!" — No! Absolutely not! This request will never be granted. It is too late. The time for action has passed, and the time for reckoning has begun. This plea is nothing more than a word that escapes his lips — a hollow utterance with no sincerity behind it, for had he been returned to the world, he would have simply resumed his former ways of sin and disobedience. His promise was false, and his repentance was insincere.

Then Allah informs us of the unchangeable reality: "And behind them is a barrier until the Day they are resurrected." Ahead of every deceased person lies the Barzakh — the realm of the grave — a barrier that separates them from returning to this worldly life. They will remain there, whether in bliss or in torment, until the appointed Day when all of humanity is raised from their graves for the final judgment. There is no return, no second chance, and no escape from what lies ahead.

A Call to Reflection and Action:

Dear reader, this verse is a profound reminder that the door of repentance is open *now* — in this very moment — but it will not remain open forever. When death arrives, the opportunity closes permanently. Do not wait until you see the angel of death before you remember your Lord. Do not wait until your deeds are recorded and your book is sealed before you wish to do good. Today, while you have breath in your lungs and a beating heart, is your golden opportunity. Every prayer you offer, every charity you give, every kind word you speak, and every sin you abandon is a treasure you are storing for the Day when you will desperately need it. Allah, in His infinite mercy, has given you this moment — seize it before it slips away, for the Barzakh awaits us all, and only our deeds will accompany us there.

📜 Verse 98-102 — Al-Mu'minun

And I seek refuge in You, my Lord, lest they be present with me."
[For such is the state of the disbelievers], until, when death comes to one of them, he says, "My Lord, send me back
That I might do righteousness in that which I left behind." No! It is only a word he is saying; and behind them is a barrier until the Day they are resurrected.
So when the Horn is blown, no relationship will there be among them that Day, nor will they ask about one another.
And those whose scales are heavy [with good deeds] - it is they who are the successful.
