Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Al-Soor (الصور): The Trumpet that will be blown by the angel Israfil, signaling the end of this world and the beginning of the Hereafter.
- Ansaab (أنساب): Lineage, family ties, and blood relations that people boast about in this worldly life.
- Yawma'idhin (يومئذ): On that Day — the Day of Resurrection.
- Yatasa'aloon (يتساءلون): They ask one another (about each other's well-being, news, or circumstances).
Tafsir (Explanation):
When the Trumpet is blown — the second blast that raises all of humanity from their graves — a profound transformation will take place. On that Day, all the pride, boasting, and honor that people attached to their family names, tribes, and lineages in this world will vanish completely. There will be no nobility of birth, no prestigious ancestry, and no social status to flaunt. The ties of kinship that people once leaned upon for support, protection, or prestige will be utterly severed in their significance.
Moreover, people will not even ask one another about their condition, their fate, or their loved ones. Every single soul will be so overwhelmed by the sheer terror and magnitude of that Day that each person will be completely absorbed in their own predicament. The Qur'an describes this state elsewhere: "Every man that Day will have enough to make him careless of others" (80:37). A father will not ask about his son, a brother will not ask about his sister, and a friend will not ask about his companion — not out of indifference, but out of sheer, consuming fear for their own souls.
This verse serves as a powerful reminder that the worldly measures of honor — wealth, lineage, status, and connections — are temporary illusions. What truly matters is one's deeds, faith, and relationship with Allah. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) made this crystal clear when he said: "Indeed, Allah has removed from you the pride of the pre-Islamic era and its boasting about ancestors. People are only two types: a righteous, God-fearing believer who is honorable before Allah, and a wicked, miserable sinner who is insignificant before Allah. You are all children of Adam, and Adam was created from dust."
So, dear reader, let this verse awaken your heart. Do not waste your life chasing after titles, family pride, or social standing that will mean absolutely nothing on that Day. Instead, invest in what will truly benefit you — your faith, your character, and your good deeds. Build a relationship with your Creator that will stand by you when every other relationship fails. For on that Day, the only nobility that will matter is taqwa (God-consciousness), and the only lineage that will benefit you is your connection to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) through following his guidance. May Allah make us among those who are honored on that Day, not by their ancestry, but by their righteousness. Ameen.
