Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Their Meanings:
- حَتَّىٰ إِذَا – "Until when" – indicating a point of no return, a moment that comes suddenly and inevitably.
- جَاءَ أَحَدَهُمُ الْمَوْتُ – "Death comes to one of them" – the arrival of death, specifically at the moment of dying, when the soul reaches the throat.
- قَالَ – "He says" – a statement uttered in a state of utter desperation and regret.
- رَبِّ ارْجِعُونِ – "My Lord, send me back" – the plural form (return me) is used as a form of reverence and magnification of Allah, or because the angels are the ones who take the soul, and the plea is ultimately directed to Allah.
The Tafsir (Explanation):
In this profound verse, Allah Almighty reveals the true state of the disbeliever or the negligent sinner at the final moment of his life. When death approaches one of them, and he sees with his own eyes the reality of what awaits him — the punishment, the loss, and the consequences of a life spent in heedlessness — a sudden, overwhelming wave of regret crashes upon him. At that very instant, when no time remains and no opportunity is left, he cries out in desperation: "My Lord, send me back! Return me to the worldly life!"
This is not a calm request, but a frantic plea born of terror and remorse. He now realizes, with absolute certainty, that everything he chased in this world — wealth, status, pleasure, and the denial of truth — was nothing but a fleeting illusion. He sees the reality of the Hereafter with his own eyes, and he knows that he has lost everything that truly matters. He wishes, with all his being, to be given one more chance to do good, to believe, to worship, and to live righteously.
But this plea comes far too late. The time for action has passed; the time for accountability has begun. This verse serves as a powerful and urgent warning to every living soul: do not wait until death approaches to wake up. Do not be like those who only remember Allah when all hope is lost. The doors of repentance are open now, while you still have breath in your lungs and time in your hands. Seize this moment, turn to your Lord with sincerity, and live a life that will make you proud to meet Him — not one that will make you beg for a return that will never be granted.
This is a mercy from Allah: He tells us this story now, before we become its main character, so that we may learn, change, and succeed. Let this verse be a wake-up call that transforms your heart today, so that when death comes — and it will surely come — you will meet it with peace, not panic, and with hope, not regret.
