And We have sent down rain from the sky in a measured amount and settled it in the earth. And indeed, We are Able to take it away.

Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • "Bi-qadar" — In precise measure, according to exact need and wisdom.
  • "Fa-askannahu" — We made it settle and remain (in the earth).
  • "Dhahab bihi" — Taking it away, causing it to vanish or disappear.

Tafsir (Explanation):

Allah, in His infinite mercy and wisdom, tells us that He sends down rain from the sky in a precise, measured quantity — not too much that it would cause devastating floods and destruction, nor too little that it would fail to meet the needs of His creation. This is a manifestation of His perfect knowledge and meticulous planning, for He knows exactly what every land, every crop, and every living being requires.

Then He says that He made this water settle and dwell within the earth, storing it in its depths so that springs gush forth, wells fill, and rivers flow — allowing people, animals, and plants to benefit from it throughout the seasons. This underground reservoir is a divine blessing that sustains life even when the skies remain dry.

But then comes the profound reminder: "And indeed, We are fully capable of taking it away." This is not merely a statement of power — it is a gentle yet firm warning. The very water you drink, the rain you rely on, the springs that quench your thirst — all of it is held by Allah's mercy. If He wills, He can cause it to sink deeper into the earth, or evaporate it, or divert the rain clouds elsewhere. And then what would you do? Your crops would wither, your livestock would perish, your lands would become barren, and you would die of thirst.

This verse carries a beautiful lesson for every believer: Never take Allah's blessings for granted. The water you use daily is not a right you possess — it is a gift that is renewed by His grace every single day. When you turn on a tap or drink from a cool spring, remember that the One who gave you this water has the absolute power to take it away in an instant.

And therein lies a call to gratitude and humility. If Allah can remove something as essential as water, then how much more should we depend on Him for everything else in our lives? This verse also serves as a warning to the wrongdoers and the arrogant — those who transgress and oppress — that the blessings they enjoy are not beyond Allah's reach. He can strip them of their comforts and leave them in utter helplessness.

So let this verse awaken in your heart a deep sense of thankfulness. Praise Allah for every drop of rain, every sip of water, and every moment of ease. And let it strengthen your trust in Him, knowing that the One who provides is also the One who sustains and protects — and that His mercy is greater than His wrath, for He reminds us of His power not to frighten us, but to bring us back to Him with love, humility, and gratitude.

📜 Verse 16-20 — Al-Mu'minun

Then indeed you, on the Day of Resurrection, will be resurrected.
And We have created above you seven layered heavens, and never have We been of [Our] creation unaware.
And We have sent down rain from the sky in a measured amount and settled it in the earth. And indeed, We are Able to take it away.
And We brought forth for you thereby gardens of palm trees and grapevines in which for you are abundant fruits and from which you eat.
And [We brought forth] a tree issuing from Mount Sinai which produces oil and food for those who eat.
