Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Dābbah (دَابَّة): Every living creature that moves and crawls upon the earth, including animals, insects, and humans.
- Min Mā’ (مِن مَّاء): From water — referring to the origin of creation, whether from the sperm-drop (nutfah) or the elemental water from which all life was made.
- Yamshī (يَمْشِي): To walk or move — used broadly here to include crawling, slithering, and other forms of locomotion.
Tafsir (Explanation):
Allah — the Exalted and Majestic — declares that He alone is the Creator of every living creature that moves upon the face of the earth. The origin of all these creatures is water, as He says elsewhere: *"And We made from water every living thing"* (Al-Anbiyā’: 30). This points to the profound reality that life itself is a gift from Allah, sustained by the very element He chose as the foundation of existence.
From this single origin, Allah has brought forth an astonishing diversity of forms and movements. Among these creatures, there are those that move by crawling on their bellies — such as snakes, worms, and similar reptiles. There are those that walk on two legs — such as human beings and birds. And there are those that walk on four legs — such as cattle, beasts of burden, and wild animals. Each of these creatures moves in the manner that suits its nature, its environment, and the purpose for which it was created.
Allah creates whatever He wills — from the creatures mentioned to countless others that defy our imagination, whether in the depths of the oceans, the vastness of the skies, or the hidden corners of the earth. Nothing is beyond His power, and no form is too complex for Him to bring into being. Indeed, Allah is All-Powerful over all things — nothing on earth or in the heavens can escape His might, and no creation is too great or too small for His command.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
Dear reader, pause and ponder this magnificent verse. The One who created all these creatures from a single humble origin — water — and then diversified them into countless forms, each with its own way of moving, living, and thriving, is the very One who created you. He knows your nature, your struggles, and your needs. If He could bring forth a snake that glides without legs, a bird that soars on two, and a camel that traverses deserts on four, then surely He is capable of guiding your steps, answering your prayers, and providing for your sustenance.
This verse invites you to look at the world around you with the eyes of faith. Every creature you see — the ant on the ground, the fish in the sea, the bird in the sky — is a living sign of Allah’s infinite wisdom and power. And if Allah is All-Powerful over all things, then turn to Him with confidence, for nothing you ask of Him is too difficult for Him to grant. Place your trust in Him, and He will never let you down.
