Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • ʿĀd – The people of Prophet Hūd, known for their immense strength and tall stature.
  • Thamūd – The people of Prophet Ṣāliḥ, who carved their homes into the mountains.
  • Aṣḥāb al-Rass – The people of the well; a community that lived near a well and rejected their prophet.
  • Qurūnan bayna dhālika kathīran – Many generations and nations that lived between these mentioned peoples.

Tafsir (Explanation):

In this verse, Allah reminds us of His justice and power by mentioning nations He destroyed for their persistent disbelief and rebellion. He destroyed ʿĀd, the people of Hūd, who were arrogant in their strength and rejected the message of monotheism. He destroyed Thamūd, the people of Ṣāliḥ, who killed the sacred she-camel and defied their prophet. He also destroyed the people of al-Rass—a community that lived by a well, worshipped idols, and rejected the prophet sent to them, leading to their ruin when the earth swallowed them and their well collapsed. And between these three nations, Allah destroyed countless other generations—so many that only He knows their number. These were peoples who lived in different times and places, yet shared the same fate: they denied the messengers, persisted in sin, and faced divine punishment.

This verse serves as a profound reminder that no power, wealth, or civilization can protect a people from Allah’s decree when they turn away from His guidance. The Qur’an repeatedly narrates these stories not merely as history, but as lessons for humanity. Every nation that rejected the truth faced consequences, and this pattern continues as a warning to all who come after them.

Daʿwah Reflection:

Dear reader, reflect on how these mighty nations—with their advanced civilizations, strong armies, and grand structures—were utterly destroyed because they rejected the messengers of Allah. Their strength did not avail them, nor did their numbers. Today, we see the same pattern in the world: those who turn away from the Creator and His guidance often face turmoil, confusion, and eventual decline, even if they appear prosperous for a time.

The Qur’an invites you to open your heart to this message. Allah, in His infinite mercy, has sent you the final revelation and the last Prophet, Muhammad (peace be upon him), as a guide to salvation. Do not be like those who heard the truth and turned away. Instead, be among those who respond to the call of faith, for Allah promises success, peace, and eternal bliss to those who believe and do righteous deeds. The stories of the past are not just tales—they are signposts on the road to guidance. Take heed, and let your heart find rest in the remembrance of Allah, the Most Merciful, who forgives all sins for those who turn to Him in sincere repentance.

📜 Verse 36-40 — Al-Furqan

And We said, "Go both of you to the people who have denied Our signs." Then We destroyed them with [complete] destruction.
And the people of Noah - when they denied the messengers, We drowned them, and We made them for mankind a sign. And We have prepared for the wrongdoers a painful punishment.
And [We destroyed] 'Aad and Thamud and the companions of the well and many generations between them.
And for each We presented examples [as warnings], and each We destroyed with [total] destruction.
And they have already come upon the town which was showered with a rain of evil. So have they not seen it? But they are not expecting resurrection.
