Translation — Tafsir

Key Words and Their Meanings:

  • Yabeetoona (يَبِيتُونَ): They spend the night; specifically, they remain awake during the night in worship and devotion.
  • Sujjadan (سُجَّدًا): Prostrating; falling on their faces in humble submission to Allah.
  • Qiyaman (قِيَامًا): Standing; remaining upright in prayer, in a posture of reverence and supplication.

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse describes a beautiful and noble quality of the true servants of Allah—those who are devoted to Him with sincerity and love. They do not let their nights pass in heedlessness or mere sleep, but rather they dedicate a portion of the night to their Lord, alternating between prostration and standing in prayer. In prostration, they lower their foreheads to the ground, humbling themselves before their Creator, acknowledging His greatness and their own utter need for Him. In standing, they raise themselves in attentive devotion, reciting His words, seeking His mercy, and pouring out their hearts in supplication.

The mention of the night is particularly significant because it is a time when the distractions of the world fade away, and the heart can focus entirely on Allah. The darkness of the night, the stillness of the surroundings, and the solitude of the worshipper create an atmosphere of deep intimacy with the Divine. This is also a time when sincerity is most pure, as the night prayer is hidden from the eyes of people, making it far removed from any desire for show or praise. The believer who prays at night does so solely for the sake of Allah, seeking His pleasure and drawing closer to Him.

This verse encourages every Muslim to cultivate this habit of night prayer, even if it is brief. It is a means of strengthening one’s faith, purifying the soul, and finding peace in the remembrance of Allah. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) himself was constant in night prayer, and he encouraged his followers to do the same, saying that the best prayer after the obligatory ones is the prayer of the night. So let us strive to emulate these righteous servants, making our nights a time of connection with our Lord, and in doing so, we will find tranquility in this life and immense reward in the Hereafter.

📜 Verse 62-66 — Al-Furqan

And it is He who has made the night and the day in succession for whoever desires to remember or desires gratitude.
And the servants of the Most Merciful are those who walk upon the earth easily, and when the ignorant address them [harshly], they say [words of] peace,
And those who spend [part of] the night to their Lord prostrating and standing [in prayer]
And those who say, "Our Lord, avert from us the punishment of Hell. Indeed, its punishment is ever adhering;
Indeed, it is evil as a settlement and residence."
