Word Meanings:
- سَاءَتْ (Sā'at): It became evil, terrible, or wretched.
- مُسْتَقَرًّا (Mustaqarrā): A place of settling, resting, or dwelling.
- مُقَامًا (Muqāmā): A place of remaining, staying, or residing permanently.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse continues the description of the believers' heartfelt supplication to their Lord, as they plead: "Our Lord, avert from us the punishment of Hell; indeed, its punishment is ever adhering" (Al-Furqān: 65). Then, they affirm the true nature of that abode: "Indeed, it is evil as a settlement and as a place to remain."
The meaning is that Hellfire is the worst possible destination for anyone to settle in, and the most dreadful place for anyone to take up permanent residence. It is not merely a temporary hardship or a passing trial—it is an eternal, unending state of torment. The word *mustaqarr* refers to the initial arrival and settling, while *muqām* refers to prolonged, continuous dwelling. Both aspects are described as utterly evil and vile.
This verse teaches us that the believers are deeply aware of the reality of the Hereafter. They do not take Hell lightly, nor do they assume they are safe from it. Instead, they combine hope in Allah's mercy with fear of His punishment, and they turn to Him in sincere supplication, asking to be spared from that dreadful fate. This is the balanced approach of a true believer: neither despairing of Allah's mercy nor feeling falsely secure from His justice.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
Dear reader, this verse is a profound reminder that our ultimate destination depends on how we live this life. Hell is not a distant myth—it is a real place, prepared for those who reject the truth and persist in sin. Yet, Allah, in His infinite mercy, has opened the door of repentance and good deeds. He has given us the Qur'an, the guidance, and the example of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) to lead us to safety.
Let this verse awaken your heart. Do not let the pleasures of this world deceive you, for they are fleeting, while the Hereafter is eternal. Turn to Allah today, in prayer and in action. Ask Him, as the believers do, to protect you from the Fire, and strive to live a life that pleases Him. The door of His mercy is wide open—so enter it before it is too late. May Allah make us among those who are saved from Hell and admitted into His eternal Paradise, where there is no fear, no sorrow, and no end to bliss.
