Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Fattaqullāh (فَاتَّقُوا اللَّهَ): Fear Allah, meaning to be mindful of Him, to protect oneself from His punishment by obeying His commands and avoiding His prohibitions.
  • Wa Aṭīʿūn (وَأَطِيعُونِ): And obey me, meaning to follow the Prophet’s guidance and instructions in what he commands and forbids.

Tafsir (Explanation):

In this verse, Prophet Nūḥ (Noah), peace be upon him, addresses his people with a profound and heartfelt call—a call that carries the essence of salvation and success. He says: *"So fear Allah and obey me."*

The command to *fear Allah* means to be conscious of Him in every moment, to revere His majesty, and to guard oneself against His wrath by wholeheartedly submitting to His will. It is a call to abandon falsehood, shirk (associating partners with Allah), and every form of transgression, and instead to embrace sincerity, righteousness, and devotion to the One True God.

The command to *obey me* refers to following the Prophet’s message—the message of Tawḥīd (monotheism), the worship of Allah alone, and the rejection of all false deities. Nūḥ, peace be upon him, was not asking for personal allegiance or worldly gain; rather, he was inviting them to a path that would lead to their own happiness in this life and the Hereafter. His obedience was not his own invention but a direct conveyance of Allah’s revelation, and thus obeying him was, in essence, obeying Allah Himself.

This verse beautifully illustrates the inseparable link between *taqwā* (God-consciousness) and *ṭāʿah* (obedience to the Messenger). True fear of Allah naturally manifests in following His guidance as delivered by His prophets. It is a reminder that faith is not merely a claim of the tongue but a living reality that transforms one’s actions, priorities, and ultimate purpose.

A Daʿwah Reflection:

Dear reader, this call of Nūḥ, peace be upon him, echoes through time and reaches you today. It is a call of mercy, not of burden—a call that frees the soul from the chains of ignorance and sin. When you fear Allah, you find peace in knowing that your life has meaning and direction. When you obey His Messenger, you unlock the keys to true success: a heart at rest, a life of purpose, and a promised reward that never fades.

Allah does not need your obedience; rather, it is you who needs His mercy. So, let this verse inspire you to take that first step toward Him—turn to your Lord with sincerity, and follow the guidance He sent as a mercy to mankind. The doors of His forgiveness are wide open, and His love awaits those who strive to draw near to Him. Will you not answer the call?
