Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- "Ajr" (أجر): Reward, recompense, or payment.
- "Rabb al-'Alameen" (رب العالمين): Lord of all the worlds — the Creator, Sustainer, and Sovereign of everything that exists.
Tafsir (Explanation):
In this noble verse, Prophet Nuh (Noah), peace be upon him, addresses his people with a heart full of sincerity and purity of intention. He declares clearly: *"I do not ask you for any payment for this message."* He makes it absolutely clear that he seeks no worldly gain, no wealth, no status, and no favor from them in return for delivering the truth. His only reward, his only hope, lies with Allah — the Lord of all the worlds.
This statement carries a profound lesson for every believer and every caller to the truth. The Prophet Nuh was not a merchant of religion, nor a seeker of fame or authority. His sole motive was the salvation of his people from the punishment of Allah and guiding them to the path of righteousness. By saying this, he removes any excuse the disbelievers might have had to reject his message — for they could not claim that he was after their wealth or position.
This verse also teaches us the purity of intention (ikhlas) in all our deeds. When we call others to goodness, when we teach, when we advise, we must ensure our hearts are free from any desire for worldly return. Our reward is with Allah alone, and He never lets the efforts of the sincere go to waste.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, look at the beauty of this prophetic character. He gave everything for his people — his time, his effort, his patience — and asked for nothing in return except their well-being. This is the selflessness that Islam instills in its followers. When you embrace this faith, you are invited to be a person of sincerity, whose actions are pure for Allah's sake. And when your intention is pure, Allah Himself takes care of your reward — a reward far greater than anything this world can offer. So let your heart be at peace: whatever good you do sincerely for Allah, He will never let it be lost.
