Key Words and Meanings:

  • Salaknāhu (سَلَكْنَاهُ): We inserted, made it pass through, or caused it to enter deeply.
  • Qulūb (قُلُوبِ): Hearts — the center of understanding, emotion, and will.
  • Al-Mujrimīn (الْمُجْرِمِينَ): The criminals, the sinners, those who persist in wrongdoing and denial of the truth.

Explanation of the Verse:

In this profound verse, Allah (Glorified and Exalted be He) declares: "Thus have We inserted it into the hearts of the criminals." The pronoun "it" refers to the denial and rejection of the Qur'an — the disbelief and stubbornness that had become deeply entrenched in the hearts of the polytheists of Quraysh.

This verse follows the preceding context in which the disbelievers made excuses, saying that the Qur'an was revealed in a language they claimed not to understand, or that they could not comprehend the message. Allah refutes these hollow excuses by stating that the real problem was not the language or the delivery — it was the corruption within their own hearts. Even if the Qur'an had been revealed in their exact tongue, recited by the most eloquent of speakers, they would still have rejected it. Why? Because their hearts had been sealed due to their persistent sinfulness, arrogance, and love for their false idols and worldly desires.

The insertion of denial into their hearts is a consequence of their own choices. They repeatedly chose falsehood over truth, and as a result, Allah left them to their own devices — their hearts became hardened, and the light of faith could no longer penetrate them. This is not an injustice from Allah; rather, it is the natural and just outcome of their continuous rebellion and transgression. They sowed the seeds of disbelief, and they reaped the harvest of blindness.

This verse carries a powerful lesson for every believer: the heart is like fertile soil. If it is watered with obedience, remembrance of Allah, and sincere repentance, it becomes soft and receptive to guidance. But if it is watered with sin, arrogance, and heedlessness, it becomes hard and impenetrable — even the most beautiful verses of the Qur'an will find no place to take root.

A Call to Reflection and Action:

Dear reader, this verse is a gentle yet firm reminder of the precious gift of faith. If you find in your heart a love for the Qur'an, a desire to pray, and a longing to draw closer to Allah — then know that this is the greatest blessing you could ever possess. Protect it with gratitude, and never take it for granted. Guard your heart from the corrosion of sin, for every sin leaves a dark stain that, if left unwashed by repentance, can eventually harden the heart completely.

The door of repentance is always open. No matter how far you have strayed, Allah's mercy is vaster than your sins. Return to Him today, soften your heart with His remembrance, and let the Qur'an find its way into the deepest chambers of your soul. For the same hearts that were sealed for the criminals can be opened for the believers — and the key to that lock is sincere, humble, and persistent supplication to the One who turns the hearts as He wills.

And he had recited it to them [perfectly], they would [still] not have been believers in it.
200كَذَٰلِكَ سَلَكْنَاهُ فِي قُلُوبِ الْمُجْرِمِينَ
Thus have We inserted disbelief into the hearts of the criminals.
201لَا يُؤْمِنُونَ بِهِ حَتَّىٰ يَرَوُا الْعَذَابَ الْأَلِيمَ
