Word Meanings:

  • فَقَرَأَهُ عَلَيْهِم (and he recited it to them): The recitation of the Qur'an by a non-Arabic speaker to the disbelievers of Quraysh.
  • مَّا كَانُوا بِهِ مُؤْمِنِينَ (they would not have been believers in it): They still would not have accepted faith, even if the message was delivered in their own tongue by a foreigner.

Tafsir (Explanation):

This verse continues the argument presented in the preceding verses, where Allah addresses the stubbornness of the disbelievers of Makkah. Even if the Qur'an had been revealed to a non-Arabic speaker—someone who did not know the Arabic language—and that person had recited it to the Quraysh in clear, eloquent Arabic, they still would not have believed. Their rejection was not due to any deficiency in the message or its delivery; rather, it was rooted in their own arrogance, pride, and deep-seated hostility toward the truth.

The verse highlights a profound reality: the disbelievers' refusal to accept faith was not a matter of misunderstanding or lack of clarity. The Qur'an was revealed in their own language, Arabic, and was recited to them by the most trustworthy of people, Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). Yet, they still rejected it. If a non-Arab had recited it to them, they would have used that as an excuse, saying, "We do not understand what he is saying," or "This is not our language." But since the message came in their own tongue, they had no such excuse—and still they turned away.

This verse serves as a powerful reminder that guidance is not merely about hearing the truth; it is about having a heart open to receive it. Allah has placed a seal upon the hearts of those who persist in disbelief and injustice, and no amount of eloquent recitation or miraculous revelation can penetrate that barrier. Their disbelief is a consequence of their own choice and their own wrongdoing, not a failure of the divine message.

Da'wah Reflection:

This verse carries a timeless lesson for all of humanity. It teaches us that the Qur'an is a universal message, revealed in a language and style that is perfectly suited to guide humanity. Yet, the key to benefiting from it lies in our hearts. When we approach the Qur'an with sincerity, humility, and a genuine desire for truth, it transforms our lives and illuminates our path. But when we approach it with arrogance, prejudice, or a closed mind, we deprive ourselves of its infinite blessings.

Dear reader, the Qur'an is not merely a book to be read—it is a living guidance, a mercy, and a light. It speaks to every soul in every age, addressing the deepest questions of existence. Open your heart to it, and you will find answers that no other source can provide. The disbelievers of old rejected it out of stubbornness, but you have the opportunity to embrace it with love and sincerity. Let not pride or habit stand between you and the greatest treasure ever revealed. The Qur'an is calling you—will you answer?
