Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Watlu (وَاتْلُ): Recite, narrate, or convey — meaning to tell the story in a way that reaches the heart and mind.
  • Naba'a (نَبَأَ): News, tidings, or an account of significant events — not just any story, but one carrying profound lessons and wisdom.
  • Ibrahim (إِبْرَاهِيم): Prophet Abraham, peace be upon him — the father of the prophets and the friend of the Most Merciful (Khalilullah).

Explanation of the Verse:

O Messenger, recite to these people — the disbelievers of Quraysh and all who reject the truth — the story of Prophet Ibrahim, peace be upon him. This is not a mere historical anecdote; it is a living lesson, a beacon of guidance, and a proof that strikes at the heart of every form of false worship. The Qur'an presents this narrative as a mirror for the disbelievers of Makkah, for they too were surrounded by idols and ancestral traditions, just as Ibrahim was. Yet Ibrahim, with his pure intellect and sincere heart, rejected all that his people held sacred and turned solely to the Creator of the heavens and the earth.

The command to "recite" is directed to the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, but it extends to every believer until the end of time — we are to tell and retell this story, to reflect upon it, and to draw strength from the unwavering monotheism of Ibrahim. His story is a testament that truth is not determined by majority, nor by inheritance, but by sincere submission to Allah alone. When you read this verse, know that Allah is inviting you to walk in the footsteps of His beloved friend — to purify your faith, to break free from blind imitation, and to stand firm even when the whole world stands against you.

A Da'wah Reflection:

This verse carries a beautiful invitation: Allah Himself is telling you, dear reader, to listen to the story of Ibrahim. Why? Because within it lies the cure for confusion, the answer to doubt, and the roadmap to a life of certainty. Ibrahim's journey from star-gazing to full conviction is a journey every soul must take. When you recite this story to your family, your children, or your community, you are not just sharing history — you are planting the seeds of tawhid (pure monotheism) in their hearts. And remember: the Prophet ﷺ was commanded to recite this story, and he did so with love and clarity. Follow his example, and let the story of Ibrahim inspire you to break every chain that binds you to anything other than Allah. For the one who truly knows Ibrahim's story will never bow to a stone, a star, or a self-made god — but will bow only to the One who created all things.

Indeed in that is a sign, but most of them were not to be believers.
And indeed, your Lord - He is the Exalted in Might, the Merciful.
And recite to them the news of Abraham,
When he said to his father and his people, "What do you worship?"
They said, "We worship idols and remain to them devoted."
