Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • اِطَّيَّرْنَا (iṭṭayyarnā): The original form is *taṭayyarnā*, meaning "we saw an ill omen" or "we considered you a bad omen." It refers to the pre-Islamic practice of seeking omens from birds—if a bird flew to the right, it was seen as good; if to the left, as bad. Here, it means they associated misfortune with Prophet Salih (peace be upon him) and his followers.
  • طَائِرُكُمْ (ṭāʼirukum): Literally "your bird," meaning the source of your fortune or misfortune—i.e., your destiny and what befalls you.
  • تُفْتَنُونَ (tuftanūn): You are being tested or tried—through both hardship and ease, good and evil.

Tafsir (Explanation):

When Prophet Salih (peace be upon him) called his people to worship Allah alone and to follow the truth, they responded not with reason or reflection, but with superstition and blame. They said to him: "We consider you and those who believe with you a source of ill omen. Since you came to us, we have faced drought, division, and misfortune—so we hold you responsible for our suffering."

This was not a logical argument, nor a sincere search for truth. It was an excuse to reject the message and to justify their stubbornness. They attributed their calamities to a human being who only wished them good, rather than looking at their own sins and disobedience.

Prophet Salih (peace be upon him) answered them with profound wisdom and clarity. He said: "Your omen—the source of your good and evil—is with Allah. He alone decrees what befalls you, and nothing happens except by His will and wisdom. I am merely a messenger; I bring you no harm, nor can I bring you benefit. If you are afflicted with hardship, it is from Allah—whether as a consequence of your actions or as a test for you."

Then he added: "Rather, you are a people who are being tested." This means: You are not being punished simply because of me; rather, Allah is testing you with both prosperity and adversity, with health and sickness, with ease and difficulty, to see who among you will be patient and grateful, and who will turn away in arrogance. The trial is not in the arrival of a prophet—the trial is in how you respond to him. Will you believe and be saved, or reject and be destroyed?

This verse carries a timeless lesson for every believer: When difficulties arise, do not fall into superstition or blame others unjustly. Instead, turn to Allah, recognize His decree, and understand that trials are a sign of His wisdom—a means to purify the soul, elevate the believer, and distinguish the truthful from the false. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Amazing is the affair of the believer. Verily, all of his affairs are good for him. If something good happens to him, he is grateful, and that is good for him. If something harmful happens to him, he is patient, and that is good for him." (Sahih Muslim)

So, dear reader, when you face hardship, do not despair. Know that Allah is testing you because He loves you and wants to raise your rank. And when you face ease, do not become arrogant. Be grateful, for gratitude increases blessings. This is the way of the believers—steadfast in patience, constant in gratitude, and always turning to Allah in every circumstance.
