Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Sū’ al-‘Adhāb (سوء العذاب): The severe, evil, or worst form of punishment.
  • Al-Akhsarūn (الأخسرون): The greatest losers, those who suffer the most profound loss.

Tafsir (Explanation):

These are the people who have been described in the preceding verses—those who do not believe in the Hereafter, whose evil deeds have been made to appear attractive to them, and who wander blindly in their confusion and arrogance. For such people, Allah declares that they will face a terrible punishment in this very world: they will be struck by killing, captivity, humiliation, and defeat. Their false confidence and worldly pride will be shattered, and they will taste the bitter consequences of their rejection of the truth even before the Final Day arrives.

Yet, their suffering in this life is only a foretaste. In the Hereafter, they will be the greatest losers of all. They will lose themselves—their very souls—and their families, as they are cast into the eternal Fire. They will have lost every chance of reward, every hope of salvation, and every opportunity to attain the everlasting bliss that awaits the believers. Their loss is absolute and irreparable: they traded the eternal for the fleeting, the truth for falsehood, and the pleasure of their Lord for His wrath.

This verse carries a profound lesson for every soul: do not be deceived by the glitter of this world or by the apparent success of those who reject the truth. The believer’s path may be difficult, but its end is honor and eternal joy. The disbeliever’s path may seem smooth for a while, but its end is loss and ruin. So hold fast to faith, for the Hereafter is the true life, and the wise are those who prepare for it while they still have time. Let this be a call to reflect: where do you stand? Will you be among the winners or the losers on that Day when no deed can be undone and no regret can be reversed?

Indeed, for those who do not believe in the Hereafter, We have made pleasing to them their deeds, so they wander blindly.

[Mention] when Moses said to his family, "Indeed, I have perceived a fire. I will bring you from there information or will bring you a burning torch that you may warm yourselves."
