Word Meanings:
- Zayyannā lahum aʿmālahum: We made their deeds appear attractive and pleasing to them.
- Yaʿmahūn: They wander blindly, confused and perplexed, unable to discern truth from falsehood.
Explanation of the Verse:
Allah informs us in this noble verse about the state of those who deny the Hereafter — those who do not believe in the resurrection, the reckoning, and the reward or punishment that awaits them. For such people, Allah has made their evil deeds appear fair and beautiful in their own eyes. This is a form of divine justice and recompense for their rejection of the truth: because they turned away from the guidance of revelation, they were left to follow their own desires, and thus their corrupt actions — whether idolatry, oppression, or immorality — seemed perfectly reasonable and even virtuous to them.
As a result, they wander in confusion and bewilderment, unable to find the straight path. Every time they encounter truth, they turn away from it, and every time they commit a sin, they feel no guilt, because their hearts have been sealed and their vision clouded. They are like a person walking in darkness, stumbling at every step, yet convinced they are on the right road.
This verse carries a profound lesson for us all: the greatest punishment for a heart that rejects the truth is not merely the torment of the Hereafter, but the very state of being lost in this life — where good looks evil, and evil looks good. When a person loses the ability to distinguish right from wrong, they have lost the most precious gift Allah has given them: the light of faith and sound judgment.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, let this verse be a wake-up call. The Qur'an is not merely a book of stories — it is a living guide that speaks to our hearts. The one who believes in the Hereafter lives with purpose, knowing that every action will be weighed, every intention will be examined, and every moment of this life is an opportunity to earn eternal bliss. But the one who denies the Hereafter lives in a prison of their own making, chasing fleeting pleasures that leave nothing but emptiness.
So ask yourself: Do I see my actions through the lens of the Qur'an and the Sunnah, or through the lens of my own desires? Do I seek Allah's pleasure, or do I merely seek to please myself? The believer is the one who constantly purifies their intentions, corrects their deeds, and turns back to Allah in repentance. Let us not be among those whose deeds are beautified for them while they remain blind to the truth. Let us instead be among those who say: "Our Lord, we have believed, so forgive us and have mercy upon us, for You are the best of the merciful."
May Allah protect us from the confusion of the deniers, and may He grant us the light of certainty that guides us to His pleasure in this life and His Paradise in the next. Ameen.
