Key Words and Their Meanings:
- "Al-Baladah" (this city): Makkah, the sacred city.
- "Harramahā" (made it sacred): Allah declared it a sanctuary of safety and peace, where bloodshed, oppression, hunting, and cutting trees are forbidden.
- "Al-Muslimīn" (those who submit): Those who surrender fully to Allah’s will, obey His commands, and worship Him alone.
Explanation of the Verse:
In this noble verse, Allah instructs His Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) to declare to his people: "I have been commanded only to worship the Lord of this sacred city—Makkah—the One who has made it a sanctuary of safety and honor. He alone owns everything in existence, and to Him belongs all dominion and sovereignty. I have also been commanded to be among those who submit completely to Him, obeying His commands and avoiding what He has forbidden."
This verse carries a profound message of Tawheed (the oneness of Allah) and the sanctity of Makkah. The Prophet (peace be upon him) is not calling people to his own whims or desires; rather, he is fulfilling the divine command to worship Allah alone, the Creator and Sustainer of all things. The mention of Makkah’s sanctity reminds us of Allah’s special favor upon this city and its people, yet the call to worship is universal—it is not limited to a place or time.
The verse also emphasizes that true submission to Allah (Islam) is the essence of the Prophet’s mission. Being a Muslim means surrendering one’s heart, soul, and actions to Allah, living in obedience to Him, and prioritizing His pleasure above all else. This is the path of peace and success in this life and the Hereafter.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
Dear reader, reflect on the beauty of this message: the Prophet of mercy (peace be upon him) was commanded to worship the Lord of the sacred city, and so are we. Allah has honored us with the same call—to worship Him alone, to respect the sanctities He has established, and to live as Muslims who submit to His will. Let this verse inspire you to strengthen your connection with Allah, to appreciate the blessings of the sacred places, and to renew your commitment to Islam. The doors of mercy are open, and the path of guidance is clear. Embrace it with sincerity, and you will find peace in this world and eternal bliss in the Hereafter.
