al-qawm al-ẓālimīn (الْقَوْمِ الظَّالِمِينَ): The oppressive people—here, Pharaoh and his chiefs.
Explanation of the Verse:
After the two sisters returned home and told their elderly father about the noble stranger who had watered their flocks with such kindness and strength, he sent one of them back to invite him. The verse paints a beautiful picture: she came to Moses (peace be upon him) walking with shyness and modesty—a hallmark of a righteous woman’s character. She said, “My father invites you so he may reward you for watering [our flocks] for us.” This was not an invitation to a lavish feast or a worldly gain; it was a simple gesture of gratitude from a man of honor.
Moses (peace be upon him) accepted the invitation and went with her. When he arrived and told the old man his full story—how he had fled Egypt after accidentally killing a man, his fear of Pharaoh’s retribution, and his long journey into the unknown—the father reassured him with words of comfort: “Do not fear. You have escaped from the oppressive people.” He meant that Pharaoh and his forces had no authority in the land of Madyan, so Moses was safe there.
This verse carries profound lessons for every believer:
The dignity of modesty: The young woman’s shy walk is praised in the Qur’an, teaching us that modesty is not weakness—it is a sign of noble character, especially for women, and it earns respect.
Gratitude for kindness: The father did not take Moses’ help for granted. He wanted to repay him. As Muslims, we should always acknowledge and appreciate even the smallest favors done to us.
Trust in Allah’s protection: When Moses felt vulnerable and afraid, Allah provided him with a safe haven and a supportive family. No matter how dire your circumstances seem, Allah’s care can open doors you never imagined.
The power of a good story: Moses shared his past with the old man, and instead of judging him, the man offered reassurance. This teaches us to listen with compassion and to be a source of comfort for those in distress.
Dear reader, see how Allah turned Moses’ fear into peace, his loneliness into family, and his hardship into ease. If you are going through trials today, remember that the same Allah who protected Moses in a foreign land is watching over you. Turn to Him, trust Him, and He will guide you to safety—just as He did for His beloved prophet.
And when he came to the well of Madyan, he found there a crowd of people watering [their flocks], and he found aside from them two women driving back [their flocks]. He said, "What is your circumstance?" They said, "We do not water until the shepherds dispatch [their flocks]; and our father is an old man."
So he watered [their flocks] for them; then he went back to the shade and said, "My Lord, indeed I am, for whatever good You would send down to me, in need."
Then one of the two women came to him walking with shyness. She said, "Indeed, my father invites you that he may reward you for having watered for us." So when he came to him and related to him the story, he said, "Fear not. You have escaped from the wrongdoing people."
He said, "Indeed, I wish to wed you one of these, my two daughters, on [the condition] that you serve me for eight years; but if you complete ten, it will be [as a favor] from you. And I do not wish to put you in difficulty. You will find me, if Allah wills, from among the righteous."
