Key Words and Phrases:

  • "اسْتَأْجِرْهُ" (ista'jirhu): Hire him or employ him for a wage.
  • "الْقَوِيُّ" (al-qawiyy): The strong, the powerful — referring to physical strength and capability to perform the task.
  • "الْأَمِينُ" (al-amin): The trustworthy, the faithful — referring to moral integrity and reliability in safeguarding what is entrusted.

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse captures a moment of profound wisdom and insight from one of the two daughters of the righteous man (Shu'ayb, peace be upon him) in Madyan. After Musa (Moses, peace be upon him) had gallantly helped the two sisters water their flocks — a deed of chivalry and strength — one of the daughters returned to her father and, with remarkable discernment, advised him: "O my father, hire him." She then articulated a timeless principle of selection: "Indeed, the best of those you can hire is the strong and the trustworthy."

Her words were not merely a suggestion but a testimony based on observation. She had witnessed Musa's physical strength when he single-handedly drew water from the well that other shepherds struggled with, and she had observed his moral character as he modestly approached her, avoiding any impropriety, and as he selflessly helped without expecting anything in return. She recognized in him the perfect combination of capability and integrity — two qualities that form the foundation of any successful employment or partnership.

This brief yet profound statement teaches us a universal lesson in human resource management and personal conduct: when we seek to delegate responsibilities, we must look for both competence (strength) and character (trustworthiness). A person may be strong but dishonest, or honest but weak — but the ideal is one who possesses both. This principle applies not only to employment but to all aspects of life: choosing leaders, partners, friends, and even spouses.

The father, being a man of wisdom, heeded his daughter's advice and offered Musa hospitality and employment. This led to Musa staying in Madyan, eventually marrying one of the daughters, and beginning a new chapter in his life that would later culminate in his prophethood. Allah, the Most High, orchestrated these events with divine wisdom, showing how a simple act of kindness and a wise recommendation can set in motion a chain of blessings.

A Call to Reflection and Action:

Dear reader, ponder the beauty of this scene: a young woman, despite the societal norms of her time, spoke with confidence and wisdom, and her father listened with humility and respect. This is the Islamic ethos — wisdom is valued regardless of who speaks it, and truth is accepted from any source. The daughter did not remain silent when she had a beneficial suggestion, and the father did not dismiss her counsel due to pride or gender bias.

This verse also invites us to embody these two noble qualities in our own lives. Strive to be strong — not only physically but in your knowledge, skills, and resolve — and strive to be trustworthy — in your words, deeds, and the secrets and responsibilities entrusted to you. When you combine these two, you become a person of value in the sight of Allah and in the sight of people. And when you are in a position to choose others, let this be your criterion: seek the strong and the trustworthy, for they are the best of companions in any endeavor.

May Allah grant us the wisdom to recognize goodness, the humility to accept good counsel, and the sincerity to embody strength and trustworthiness in all our affairs.

📜 Verse 24-28 — Al-Qasas

So he watered [their flocks] for them; then he went back to the shade and said, "My Lord, indeed I am, for whatever good You would send down to me, in need."
Then one of the two women came to him walking with shyness. She said, "Indeed, my father invites you that he may reward you for having watered for us." So when he came to him and related to him the story, he said, "Fear not. You have escaped from the wrongdoing people."
One of the women said, "O my father, hire him. Indeed, the best one you can hire is the strong and the trustworthy."
He said, "Indeed, I wish to wed you one of these, my two daughters, on [the condition] that you serve me for eight years; but if you complete ten, it will be [as a favor] from you. And I do not wish to put you in difficulty. You will find me, if Allah wills, from among the righteous."
[Moses] said, "That is [established] between me and you. Whichever of the two terms I complete - there is no injustice to me, and Allah, over what we say, is Witness."
