Key Words and Phrases:

  • Tāba (تاب): To turn back in repentance from disbelief and sin, returning to Allah with sincerity.
  • Āmana (وآمن): To believe with firm conviction in Allah, His messengers, and all that He has revealed.
  • ʿAmila Ṣāliḥan (وعمل صالحًا): To perform righteous deeds — actions that are in accordance with Allah’s commands and the teachings of His Prophet (peace be upon him).
  • ʿAsā (عسى): Literally "perhaps" or "may," but when used by Allah in the Qur’an, it denotes a guaranteed promise, not a mere possibility.
  • Al-Mufliḥūn (المفلحون): Those who attain true success — the ones who are saved from all that they fear and granted all that they hope for, in this life and the Hereafter.

Tafsir (Explanation):

After describing the fate of those who associate partners with Allah and persist in their arrogance and wrongdoing, this verse opens a door of hope and mercy that is wide enough for every sinner. Allah says: "But as for the one who repents and believes and does righteous deeds, then he is among the successful."

This verse is a direct address to those who have fallen into shirk (associating partners with Allah) — the gravest of sins — and yet it does not close the door upon them. Instead, it calls them to three essential steps:

  1. Repentance (Tawbah): This is not merely saying "I am sorry." It is a sincere turning away from the sin, feeling deep regret, and making a firm resolve never to return to it. The one who repents leaves behind the darkness of disbelief and enters the light of faith.
  2. Faith (Īmān): True repentance must be accompanied by genuine belief in Allah — His oneness, His attributes, His messengers, and His final decree. Faith is the foundation upon which all righteous actions are built.
  3. Righteous Deeds (ʿAmal Ṣāliḥ): Faith is not a mere claim; it must be proven through action. Righteous deeds include the obligations Allah has commanded — prayer, charity, fasting, and pilgrimage — as well as every good word and deed that brings benefit to humanity and draws one closer to Allah.

When Allah says "ʿasā" (perhaps/may), it is not a word of uncertainty. In the divine speech, it is a promise of certain fulfillment. The scholars have explained that this expression is used to instill both hope and reverence in the believer — hope in Allah’s boundless mercy, and reverence for His majesty.

The result is stated beautifully: "he is among the successful" — the Mufliḥūn. Who are they? They are the ones who have achieved everything that truly matters. They are saved from the Fire, granted entry into Paradise, and blessed with Allah’s pleasure — the greatest reward of all. They are the ones whose scales are heavy with good deeds, whose faces radiate with light, and whose hearts are at peace with their Lord.

A Call to the Reader:

Dear reader, no matter how far you have strayed, no matter how heavy your sins may seem, this verse is a direct invitation to you. Allah — the Most Merciful — does not say, "Whoever was never a sinner." He says, "Whoever repents." The door of repentance is open until the moment your soul reaches your throat. Do not let Shaytan (Satan) deceive you into despair. Allah’s mercy surpasses His wrath, and His love for those who return to Him is greater than a traveler’s joy upon finding his lost camel in a barren desert — as the Prophet (peace be upon him) told us.

Take the first step today. Turn back to your Lord with a sincere heart. Believe in Him with certainty. And begin to act — even a small, consistent good deed is beloved to Allah. For the promise of Allah is true: you will be among the successful. What a beautiful ending, and what a glorious destiny awaits those who answer this call!

📜 Verse 65-69 — Al-Qasas

And [mention] the Day He will call them and say, "What did you answer the messengers?"
But the information will be unapparent to them that Day, so they will not [be able to] ask one another.
But as for one who had repented, believed, and done righteousness, it is promised by Allah that he will be among the successful.
And your Lord creates what He wills and chooses; not for them was the choice. Exalted is Allah and high above what they associate with Him.
And your Lord knows what their breasts conceal and what they declare.
