Word Meanings:
- "Fa 'amiyat" — became blinded, hidden, or obscured.
- "Al-anba'" — the news, reports, or arguments (here referring to any possible excuses or justifications).
- "Yawma'idhin" — on that Day (the Day of Judgment).
- "La yatasa'alun" — they do not ask one another.
Explanation of the Verse:
On that terrifying Day of Judgment, all possible arguments, excuses, and justifications that the disbelievers might have relied upon will be completely obscured from them — as if struck blind. They will find no words to defend themselves, no reasoning to present, and no plea to offer. The severity of the shock and the certainty of the punishment awaiting them will render them utterly speechless and paralyzed with fear.
What is particularly striking is that they will not even ask one another for help or advice — not a single word will pass between them. Normally, in times of crisis, people turn to each other for support, guidance, or even to share their despair. But on that Day, the horror will be so overwhelming that even this natural human instinct will vanish. Each person will be consumed entirely by their own dread, unable to think of anyone else or anything else.
This silence is not a calm silence — it is the silence of utter hopelessness. They know with absolute certainty that no excuse will be accepted, no intercession will avail them, and no escape is possible. The very arguments they used to convince themselves and others in this worldly life will be stripped away, leaving them exposed and defenseless before their Lord.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, contemplate this scene with a heart that is awake. Today, in this world, we are given the opportunity to speak, to ask, to repent, and to seek forgiveness. The doors of mercy are wide open, and our Lord calls upon us day and night: "Call upon Me; I will respond to you" (Ghafir 40:60). But on that Day, the doors will close, and silence will reign.
Do not wait until the day when your excuses are taken from you and your tongue is tied. Turn to your Lord now, while the chance remains. Ask Him for guidance, seek His forgiveness, and strive to live by His commands. For the One who created you is the Most Merciful, and He has promised that whoever comes to Him walking, He will come to him running. Let this verse be a wake-up call — a reminder that the time to act is now, not tomorrow, and certainly not on a Day when no questions will be asked and no answers will be given.
