Explanation of the Verse:
This noble verse addresses a profound truth about Allah’s absolute sovereignty and wisdom. Your Lord, O Messenger, creates whatever He wills — whether it be the heavens, the earth, the angels, or human beings — and He alone has the right to choose whom He pleases for His special favors, such as prophethood, guidance, and divine mercy. His creation and His choice are not subject to anyone’s approval or objection.
The verse was revealed in response to the polytheists of Makkah who, in their arrogance, questioned why the Qur’an was not sent down upon a "great man" from either of the two prominent cities (Makkah or Ta’if) — referring to Al-Walīd ibn Al-Mughīrah or ‘Urwah ibn Mas‘ūd Al-Thaqafī. They presumed that they had the right to dictate who should receive Allah’s message, as if they were partners in His decree.
Allah refutes this presumption decisively: "They have no choice whatsoever." No human being — regardless of their wealth, status, or lineage — possesses the authority to decide who receives divine revelation or who is chosen for Allah’s special favor. That prerogative belongs exclusively to Allah, the All-Wise, who knows perfectly who is worthy of His trust and who will carry His message with sincerity and integrity.
Then Allah glorifies Himself, declaring: "Glory be to Allah, and exalted is He above what they associate (with Him)." He is far above the false gods and partners that the polytheists invent, and far above their flawed judgments and objections to His divine will. His wisdom is perfect, His knowledge is comprehensive, and His choice is always the most fitting — even if human minds cannot always grasp the underlying reasons.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
Dear reader, this verse carries a timeless lesson for all of humanity. It reminds us that we are not the ones who decide our destinies or question the divine plan. Allah, in His infinite mercy and wisdom, has chosen for us the best of paths — the path of Islam — and has sent us the best of messengers, Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, as a mercy to all worlds.
When we submit to Allah’s choice with a content heart, we find peace that surpasses all understanding. We realize that the One who created us knows what is best for us better than we know ourselves. So, let us not be like those who object to Allah’s decree, but rather let us embrace His choice with gratitude and trust, saying: "We hear and we obey." Indeed, in that submission lies our true success and eternal happiness.
